The Consummation

Inspired by history: The bedding ceremony refers to the wedding
custom of putting the newlywed couple together in the marital bed in
front of numerous witnesses, usually family, friends, and neighbors,
thereby completing the marriage. The purpose of the ritual was to
establish the consummation of the marriage, either by actually
witnessing the couple's first sexual intercourse, or symbolically, by
leaving before consummation. What would it be like to be witnessed – a
history imagined.

Serving the Country

The Embarrassing Punishment

Jacob
was almost 15, small for his age but growing rapidly now puberty had
taken a hold of his young body. He lived with his parents, 13 year old
sister, and as a family they spent a lot of time with his dad’s sister,
Aunt Susan and her two daughters aged 14 and 12. Unfortunately for
Jacob his parents were firm believers in corporal punishment but only
for boys. Many a time over the years he had been spanked by his father
over the knee or slippered bent over the armchair. This was usually
done with just his dad and sometimes his mother present. He was always
spanked on the bare bottom. Lately though his father was finding the
boy getting rather tiresome in his behaviour and after discussing it
with his wife and sister had decided the next time Jacob did something
more serious or just plain stupid, the punishment regime would be
different.

serving, he realises that being a slave will be an humiliating,
shameful and at times painful experience. He must settle in and find
his place in the household - a place that is of course going to be at
the bottom. He must also learn quickly that instant obedience is
expected else punishment will be swift and harsh.
