“We’ve been
over this numerous
times!” Mara said in exasperation. “When solving for X, what’s the
first thing
you have to do?”
“Hey,
you know math isn’t my best subject!” Chris protested. “So get off
my back!”
“But I
like it up here,” she said from her seat on his back.
In
their earlier sessions - before her wish had been granted - tutoring
had consisted of Mara uselessly attempting to explain the concepts
while Chris
daydreamed and copied her answers. Now he was being forced to pay
attention.
She had discovered a few tricks which helped keep him focused. Instead
of
sitting comfortably in a chair, she made him stand and bend over the
desk. If
that wasn’t sufficient, she boosted herself on to his back and
conducted the
lesson from there.
But
sometimes even that wasn’t enough and she had to resort to further
measures. She slid off him to the floor. He stood there in his briefs.
She
found that this kept him grounded during the session - this and the
threat of
what would happen if he zoned out - as he just had. She grabbed the
back of his
waist band and tugged the garment to his knees. Moments later, there
were two
pink hand prints on the white globes of his behind.
“Will
you pay attention now?” she asked.
In the
weeks following her make over, Mara had changed completely. She
walked to school in her new outfits with confidence and poise. Her
shapely legs
had gained color. She learned how to talk normally and not as if she
had
swallowed a thesaurus. Her classmates took notice and not just because
she was
often in Chris’s company but also because of the way she treated him -
like a
younger child. She chided him when he failed to pay attention in class
or made
a disparaging comment about a schoolmate. To their surprise, Chris
never turned
on her but meekly accepted her criticism. It was a complete role
reversal from
the days she had followed him like a puppy while he used her to improve
his
grades. Eventually she formed a relationship with a boy who - while not
as
gorgeous as Chris - was still quite handsome, a straight-A student and
a nice
person.
Leaving
Chris’s underpants at his knees, Mara boosted herself to his
back and continued the lesson. Chris glanced at the clock and groaned.
Another twenty
minutes left. How could being tutored feel like such torture? Mara
glanced at
the clock and sighed. Only twenty minutes left. Who could believe
tutoring
would be such fun?
Across
the hall, Jerry and Stella were also studying. He was sitting on
her bed and she was sitting on his lap, acting out a scene from the
book they
were reading in class. He put his arms around her and kissed her.
“You’re
supposed to push me away,” she said.
“That
Holden was an idiot,” Jerry said, grinning. “Then again, the girl
in the story wasn’t you.”
“I
can’t believe the two of us hooked up.”
“It was
inevitable.”
“Nice
vocabulary word.”
“Now
that I’m paying attention in class, I’m learning new words. We were
always meant to hook up. If I hadn’t acted like such a jerk, it would
have
happened sooner.”
“So
you’re over what we did to you?”
“More
or less. I consider it a wake up call.”
“You
said more or less. What’s the less?”
“The
fact that you recorded it. I don’t care how much encryption you
used when you saved it. Sooner or later, these things get out. There
are a
whole lot of celebrities who can tell you about that.”
“Well,
you have nothing to worry about. We had a little discussion and
decided you should be a free man. Everything’s been deleted.”
“Do you
mean it?”
“Jerry,
you’re my boyfriend now. If I needed those videos to keep you in
line, I’d say we had a serious problem.”
“That’s
a relief.”
“But I
still have a serious problem. The night Chris attacked me, he was
recording it on his cell phone. I was expecting him to make a trade, my
videos
for his. But he never brought it up. What do you think he’s waiting
for?”
“I
think he lost the media card in his phone.”
“OMG!
What if someone finds it?”
Jerry
pulled out his wallet. From between his student ID and library
card he withdrew a tiny chip and handed it to her.
“The
media card from Chris’s phone. When he ran away from Tani holding
the phone, he ran to the bathroom. When she pulled him out, he didn’t
have it.
I figured he must have hidden it there. I found it in the laundry
hamper.”
“No
wonder Chris never mentioned it! I wish I could have seen the look
on his face when he found it missing. Does he know you have it?”
“No.
And I don’t have it anymore. It’s yours. I strongly advise you to
erase it.”
“I’ll
take care of that right now. You know something, Jerry? Jeannie’s
not the only one who grants wishes.”
(The End)
