Timothy (15 years old)

Dear it’s Not Fair:

My name is Timothy Conway, but everybody calls me “Timmy.” I am 15 years old and in the 9th grade. The last time I wrote to you, I was in the hospital after having been abused by my mother and my 12-year-old sister Jenny. I had a bad infection and was on antibiotics 24/7 to clear up the infection in my groin area. My former babysitter and now girlfriend Tami (age 14) rescued me when she found out what was going on and her mother took me to the hospital. I was barely conscious and in great pain, so they put me out and I didn’t wake up until 10 PM. Tami was in the room with me, already in her pajamas. They had arranged for her to spend the rest of the week in the hospital with me and brought a separate bed for her into my room.

Part 6

Tuesday was a gorgeous day, bright and sunny and the promise that I would be let out of the hospital at last. After breakfast, Tami and I got up, showered (together, of course) and changed into fresh PJ’s. (We were careful to lock the door before getting undressed.) Then we watched TV and snuggled a bit while waiting for the doctor.

Around 9 o’clock, Dr. Ballantine, my regular pediatrician, came in with Dr. Vargas, Tami’s pediatrician. They both examined me carefully, the usual prodding and taking of vital signs, while Tami watched anxiously. Then Dr. Vargas cleared his throat.

“Well, Timmy, we have conferred with the house staff and we are all agreed that you can go home with the Langston’s today.” he said.

Tami yelled “Yippie!” and jumped up and down with joy.

I tried to maintain some dignity, but could feel the tears running down my cheeks.

The two doctors smiled as Tami jumped onto my bed and started hugging me.

Dr. Vargas continued, “Dr. Ballantine and I have agreed that I should take over you and Danny as patients since I am already taking care of Tami and Kevin.”

Dr. Ballantine nodded. “I am still Jenny’s regular doctor, so it seemed wise to avoid any potential conflict with your former family. And Dr. Vargas and I are old friends, so we can consult each other as needed.”

The words “former family” brought it home to me that my life was about to make a drastic change.

Dr. Vargas smiled again. “Now you kids can get dressed in your regular clothes. Mr. Jensen and Ms. Wallace will be here about 10:30 to do the legal paperwork. Mr. and Mrs. Langston will be here shortly afterward.”

Once the doctors left, Tami and I wasted no time in getting out of our jammies and into our street clothes. Tami, of course, had been switching back and forth between regular clothes and PJ’s all week, but this was the first time I had been in real clothes since I got to the ER. It felt good. It was even better when Mr. Jensen and Mrs. Wallace got there with the paperwork. We were able to go out of the room and sit at the table in the lounge on real chairs while we read the papers and had them explained to us. I think it was the first time either of us had felt like grown-ups and it felt good.

Then Aunt Carol and Uncle David showed up and we all went through the paperwork again. Of course, the legal part went over our heads, but we knew that it meant that Danny and I would have a home with people who loved us, and that Tami and I could be together. There was even a place for Tami to sign the paperwork. I don’t think it was legally necessary, but it let her feel important when she signed her name right next to mine. (Danny and Kevin didn’t have to sign because they were under 14.)

Then we got hugs from all the nurses and staff and went to my new home. I had been there a few times, but always on the ground floor and had never seen the upstairs. It was a big house with lots of room. Three bedrooms and a big bathroom on the second floor and an attic that I had never seen.

Uncle David paused in the hallway on the second floor. “This is our bedroom; the main bathroom is over there, and Kevin and Tami’s bedrooms are just down the hall.” He indicated what looked like a closet door in the hallway. Upstairs, there is an old bedroom that we had for Carol’s sister when she lived with us for a while just after Kevin was born. You remember Aunt Debbie, Tami?”

Tami nodded, “She was just here for a year or two and I was pretty small, but I remember her.”

“Debbie stayed with us while she was going through her divorce,” Aunt Carol explained. “After that she got a new job and moved to Oregon. Since then, be have just used the third floor for storage.”

Uncle David smiled. “But not any more. Come on, kids, let’s see what’s up there now.”

The stairs were kind of narrow, but there was a big window at the top, so they were well lighted. The whole place had the “fresh paint” smell that you get with newly refurnished rooms. I was amazed at what I saw when I got to the top. The room at the top of the stairs was huge for an attic room, almost as big as the living room downstairs, although the roof sloped into the room, so it was not as much area. But there was a huge window on the south side looking over the valley with two desks up against it. There were bookshelves along one side and a couch along the other with a couple of chairs in the middle. I couldn’t believe this whole space was for me. I just stood there gaping. Tami was standing beside me and her mouth was wide open, too.

Carol laughed. “You two better close your mouths before you catch flies. What do you think of your new office?

“O-o-office?” I managed to squeak out. “Just for us kids?”

David chuckled. “Yep, space for your desks, books and all the other stuff you need for your schoolwork. And each of you has your own computer. You’ll have to share the printer, though.”

There was even a microwave and a small refrigerator. We were stunned.

“And that’s just the office part,” he continued. I had been looking around, figuring I’d be sleeping on the couch, when I noticed two other doors. He opened the first one. “This is the bathroom. Not very big, but it’s got a shower, sink and toilet. If you want a tub bath, you’ll have to use the one downstairs.”

My own shower? WOW!

Then he opened the other door. “And here is the bedroom.” I looked in and saw that it was almost as big as the office. And then I saw the bed. It was a huge queen-size bed instead of the kid-size bed I was expecting. My eyes bugged out and I could hear Tami gasp, “Oh my God.”

Neither of us could say a word. We just stood there, and our arms went around each other almost by instinct.

“I know, this is a bit of a shock,” Aunt Carol said. “We thought about getting twin beds, but it just seemed so much more appropriate for you to share the bed. But we can still go back to twin beds if you want.”

“NO!” Tami and I blurted out in unison.

“I-I-I-I just never expected you would want us to sleep in the same room,” I finally stammered out. “We’re just fourteen and fifteen.”

“We trust you kids,” David said firmly. “Better it’s in the open rather than you guys sneaking around behind out backs. You’ve both been checked for diseases and Tami’s implant is good for five more years, so there won’t be any big surprises. Of course, you have to promise that neither of you will have any kind of sex with anybody but each other.”

“We promise,” we both said in unison.

“We figured that we’d give you the chance to prove your maturity.” Carol said. “This gives you the incentive to grow up quickly and responsibly. Don’t blow it.”

Of course, the first thing we did after hearing the words “maturity” and “responsibility” was to sit down on the bed, hugging each other and bawling like five-year-old’s.

“And this way, Danny can have Tami’s old room and Kevin gets his room back all to himself. Everybody’s happy,” Uncle David continued triumphantly.

“Now, I’ll give you two a half hour to stop blubbering and clean yourselves up and we’ll have lunch downstairs.” Aunt Carol announced. “Don’t forget that Danny and Kevin will be home from school around three and I am sure Tami’s friends will be over soon afterwards. Try to give a reasonable imitation of sophisticated young adults while the other kids are around.”
