Chapter 1
I first met Derek when we were both around 10 years old. We lived
across the creek from one another, our worlds as different as the
little divide the seperated the land we lived on.
I was white and came from a somewhat wealthy family. My father ran a
bank in town. His was a farmer who barely made ends meet. He did yard
work for my father to help his family.
We went to different schools, and had different friends. I ran with
wealthy white kids. He with blacks who lived a similar life.
Yet the first time I met him in the woods on the other side of the
creek between our homes I felt a connection.
I had gone into the woods to explore. He did the same with his old
trusty dog Buster.
"My papa says he's old," Derek said the first time we met. "But he
don't act like it. He loves to have fun. He loves to hunt."
Derek invited me to come along with him and Buster. They had a special
relationship. I sometimes felt like a third wheel as we hunted for
animals, played fetch with Buster and skipped rocks at the pond in the
middle of the woods.
The woods were secluded. I didn't ever remember seeing anyone else come
around, except the three of us.
I remember sitting on a rock listening to Derek talk about his dreams
of one day taking over his father's farm. He also wanted to raise and
train dogs.
He had a special way with Buster. It was easy for me to see. We played
a good bit during the summer. But once school came around, we didn't
see each other much.
We had school work. We had our other friends. We had other activities.
We saw each other on the holidays, but that was it.
But once school let out, I always went roaming in the woods, hoping to
find him and Buster doing the same.
The summer after we turned 12, well that was little bit different.
I saw him roaming in the woods with a different dog, a much younger dog.
"Ol' Buster died during the winter," he said. "So papa got me Colonel,
here."
There was a bit of sadness in Derek's voice. Buster was older than he
was, an Irish setter. He had always been there for Derek.
Colonel was just a hound dog.
"I'm sure he'll be a good dog, but not as good a dog as Ol' Buster,"
Derek said.
I tried to cheer him up as we talked about our memories with Buster. A
smile came across Derek's face when I started barking and howling like
Buster.
"You know, that's pretty good," Derek said. "You really sound like
Buster. And you've got red hair like him, too."
Then Derek came up with an idea, one we didn't know at the time would
really change both of our lives.
He pulled Buster's collar and chain out of a pocket in his overalls. He
mourned for his dog that much.
"Pete, how about you pretending to be Ol' Buster," he said.
"Sure, it might be fun!" I said with a laugh.
I got down on all fours. He put the collar around my neck.
He told me to sit, roll over and do a few tricks that Buster used to do.
"Buster was a smart ol' dog," Derek said.
He was right, Buster could do all of those tricks. He tried to get
Colonel to do some of the things I did.
Colonel just seemed to have a curious look on his face wondering what
these silly boys were up to.
Pretty soon, we'd spent all day pretending to be a master and his two
dogs. That was until about supper time, when we both had to go our
seperate ways.
I had some explaining to do as to why my clothes were so dirty.
I would end up spending a good part of my summer pretending to be
Buster.
"I'm going to miss you, Buster," Derek said on one of our last days of
the summer.
As was the case the previous years, I didn't see much of him until the
holidays. But I couldn't keep pretending to be Buster out of my mind.
When school let out for Thanksgiving, I hoped to see Derek, crossed the
creek and went on my usual exploring in the woods. It was a bit cool,
but still a bit mild.
I heard Colonel and another dog howling in the woods, running through
the dead leaves.
"Yo, Peter!" I heard Derek shout.
"Over here!" I shouted back.
I went running to meet him. Standing with him was another boy who
looked to be a couple of years younger than us.
Derek introduced him as his cousin Michael, who was visiting him over
the holidays.
We followed the dogs out to the pond, where we skipped a few rocks.
"I know what we can do," Derek said. "We can pretend Pete's Buster."
"Pretend Pete is Buster?" Michael asked.
Michael remembered Derek's trusty dog. Derek explained how I pretended
to be Buster after Buster died.
"Yeah, Pete can be Buster!" Michael shouted. "That will be fun. We can
get he, and Colonel and Rascal to go huntin'."
I got down on my knees like I had a bunch of times. Derek put Buster's
collar around my neck. Michael was amazed Derek still carried it around.
Derek then commanded me to sit.
Michael had a disappointed look on his face and shook his head.
"What's wrong Mike?" Derek asked.
"He aint no dog," Michael said.
"Of course he is," Derek replied. "He's Buster!"
"He ain't no Buster, either!" Mike said.
I looked up with a curious expression.
"We're just pretending, Mike," Derek said. "Thought you wanted Pete to
be Buster."
"I do," Michael said. "But there is a problem."
"What's that?" Derek asked.
I would have asked the same question. But I was pretending to be Buster
and whimpered instead of spoke.
"He ain't no dog because dogs don't wear no clothes," Michael said.
Derek had a look of deep thought on his face.
My face turned as red as my hair and I offered a protest.
"Oh no!" I said, breaking out of dog mode.
"That's ok," Derek said. "We can do something else. You don't have to
be Buster anymore if you don't want to."
We were silent for a couple of minutes when Derek and Michael started
to walk off after their dogs.
"Wait a minute," I said.
They turned around. Both started grinning when they saw me pull of my
shoes and socks, then peeled off my overalls. Derek folded them up and
put them beside the rock.
I then pulled off my shirt, leaving just a pair of underwear briefs off.
"You can leave those on Pete," Derek said.
I shook my head, and pulled them off and whimpered.
Derek took them and put them with my other clothes.
"See there, I told you Buster was a good Ol' Dog!" Derek said with a
smile on his face.
"He sure is!" Michael shouted as he stooped down to pet me.
"Good boy!" Michael said.
The other dogs ran up beside me.
Derek spotted a long fird feather on the ground and commanded me to
crawl to him.
"Michael, you know what Buster's missing?" he asked his cousin.
Michael shrugged his shoulders. I wondered what he was talking about,
too.
He picked up the feather.
"He's missing a tail," he laughed.
"Yes he is!" Michael said.
Derek took the feather, spread my butt cheeks, and shoved it in where
it would fit.
I wagged my tail.
"Good boy!" Derek said, patting me on the butt.
"Sit Buster!" Derek commanded.
I sat. I rolled over. I went and fetched what seemed like a hundred
sticks.
"Irish setters are bird dogs aren't they?" Michael asked Derek.
"Yes," Derek said.
"Look Buster, a flock of ducks!" Michael said, pointing to a flock
flying overhead.
I pointed like dogs I've seen on TV.
Derek and Michael and pretended to be hunters and shot at the birds. I
was commanded to retrieve the imaginary ducks they shot.
The other times, I felt like I was pretending to be Buster. That day I
felt like I was Buster.
Chapter 2
It was a mild day during the Christmas holidays, although snow was
still on the ground.
I told my mother was going to go exploring again in the woods. I really
didn't know if I would get to see Derek again. Deep down, I hoped I did.
I heard the birds chirp as I walked into the woods. The leaves crunched
as I walked over them and the snow that was on top of them.
My heart leaped as I heard dogs barking in the distance. One of them
sounded like Colonel. I tried not to trip as I walked fast toward the
meadow.
Sure enough, there was Colonel and two other dogs. Walking with them
was Derek and an older boy I didn't recognize. I was a bit
disappointed. It was a little cool, but I sort of wanted to be Buster.
But with the other boy there, I figured that would be out of the
question.
I turned around disappointed and started toward home. But all of the
sudden, I heard the dogs running in my direction. I could hear the
leaves restle and the snow crunch.
"What is it boy?" I heard Derek shout. "What have you found?"
I turned around just in time to have Colonel leap right on my chest and
knock me down into a pile of snow covered leaves.
"You've found Buster!" Derek shouted, running up to his dog as Colonel
licked my face.
"How's it going, Derek?" I asked.
"So this is Buster?" the older boy asked.
"Well, he would be," Derek said. "Except he's wearing clothes right
now. And dogs don't wear clothes."
Derek introduced me to his friend Ladarius, who owned the other two
dogs.
"He's a good dog when he can be my dog," Derek said, patting me on my
head.
"Why can't he be your dog right now?" Ladarius said. "We can find a
place to put his clothes."
"But isn't it a little too cold?" I said.
"It ain't much colder than it was during Thanksgiving," Derek said.
He had a point.
"I found something," Ladarius said, picking up a trash bag from beside
a rock and emptying its contents. "It's only a little wet."
I took a deep breath, and pulled off my shoes and socks. I then
unstrapped my overalls. As I pulled my shirt over my head, I felt a tug
and my underpants were pulled down to the ground by Derek. I guess
there wasn't a choice this time.
I got down on all fours as Ladarius put my clothes in the bag. He put
the bag under a rock for safe keeping.
"Just remember where we put it," he said.
I was a little surprised when Derek pulled Buster's collar out of one
of his overall pockets. He snapped it around my neck.
He patted my head and said "good boy."
I got on my knees reached up with my two hands and licked Derek on the
face as his kneeled down to pet me.
"Good boy," he said.
Ladarius reached down and petted me, too, and I did the same.
Ladarius noticed I had a little bit of a hard on. He laughed.
"There are no lady dogs here," he said.
I was embarrassed.
"Come, Buster!" Derek said as I followed him on fours into the meadow.
The other dogs ran around me, not really knowing what to expect from a
white boy pretending to be one of them.
Colonel walked by my side as if to protect me from the other dogs.
One of the other dogs hiked his leg to a tree and peed.
"Does Buster do that?" Ladarius asked Derek.
"Don't know, never seen him do it," Derek said. "If he has to take a
piss, he will."
I did have to pee. I hiked my leg in the same spot. They laughed as I
got some of it on me.
"That's Ok Buster," Derek said. "You'll get better at it."
Just then Colonel came up to the same spot and took a piss.
Ladarius said he was claiming the territory.
I did a few tricks along with Colonel when he reached Derek's favorite
spot at the lake, next to the rock where we would climb and set.
I saw some birds and pointed. Both Derek and Ladarius clapped.
"We're supposed to meet some of the guys back at my house for ball,"
Ladarius said.
I figured my time as Buster was about at an end for the day.
"I'll take him back to get his clothes," Derek said.
"You ain't got to do that," Ladarius said. "My folks ain't home. We can
put him and Colonel in the back of the truck with my dogs. We'll just
put the dogs in the dog pen back in our barn. The barn's heated."
I jumped into the back of the truck with the rest of the dogs. Ladarius
lived on a dirt road on the other side of the woods.
"I'm going to put Derek's dogs into the pen with my dogs," I heard
Ladarius say tell someone on his cell phone.
It was his sister, Latoya.
And she was waiting when we got there. She was nine years old.
Her eyes got big, as did her smile when she saw me.
"He's my special dog," Derek said as I jumped out from the back of the
truck.
"He sure is a pretty dog," Latoya said. "Can I pet him?"
Derek shook his head yes. She petted me.
Derek and Ladarius then led us to the pen. It had a dirt floor full of
holes. And a kennel.
The other dogs tried to sniff me and jump on me after they put me in
the pen, but Colonel would growl if one of them got too rough.
Derek and Ladarius went off to play basketball with their friends. I
seemed almost forgotten.
Then I heard Lotoya shout to Derek that she was going to take me for a
walk. I heard him shout "Ok!"
She came to a pen with a chain and attached it to my collar. I followed
her around the barn. My heart leaped in horror when we were in view of
the basketball game.
The boys stopped the game and came over and encircled me. Ladarius
explained how I was Derek's dog. And Derek had me do tricks before they
got back to their game.
Latoya led me to the back of the house and attached my chain to the
clothes line and asked me to wait. She came back with a dog bowl full
of food. She also got a bowl of water.
I ate. The food tasted horrible. But I got a pat on the head.
She then returned me to the pen, where I was forgotten about for a
couple of more hours.
Finally, Derek and Ladarius came back to the pen and retrieved me and
Colonel. They put us back in the truck, where we remained until we got
to the meadow.
Derek got out. Colonel and I leaped from the back of the truck.
"Sorry it took so long," Derek said to me after the truck pulled away.
He asked me to stay Buster for a little while longer, even though it
was getting cooler.
He led me and Colonel to his favorite rock. I laid on it, even though
it was cold on my naked skin.
Derek snapped his fingers and told me to roll over on my back. He
played with my chest just as he did Colonel.
"Buster, one of these days I'm going to be rich," he said. "Promise me
you'll be my dog forever if I do."
I didn't take him too seriously, but I promised. I wiggled my ass with
excitement.
I had to admit that deep down I wished that were true.
(The End)
