Chapter 40 Wednesday
Light streaming through the open window and a cool breeze woke Johnny the next morning, looking over the side of the bed at the mattress on the floor, he could see a wonderful vision. Debbie was asleep, sprawled on the makeshift bed, wearing only one of her dad's old shirts. The buttons were undone half way down the front and most of her chest was visible. Her breasts gently moved up and down with her breathing and her face looked so peaceful as she slumbered. Johnny shivered as the damp early morning breeze blew across his naked body and he tired to reach for a blanket or sheet at the least.
"OUCH, Damn," he said with a grunt when the wound on his shoulder was pulled.
"Just what the hell do you think you're doing?" an angry looking Debbie said from above him.
"Cold... I was trying to get a sheet or blanket."
"And why didn't you just wake me?"
"You looked so happy and peaceful sleeping... I didn't want to wake you. I'm Sorry, I know I should have... You're not going to be mad at me like Nancy are you?"
Debbie reached across him and gently pulled a cotton blanket over his back, then leaned down and kissed his cheek. "No Johnny, I'm not mad at you and for what it's worth, neither is Nancy. 'Annoyed' is probably a better term for what I feel right now."
"I'm sorry... you just looked so beautiful sleeping, I... I couldn't wake you..."
Debbie stroked his neck as she leaned in for another kiss and whispered, "you keep talking like that, and I'll forget to even be annoyed with you..."
"Really?"
"Well now you're working on 'annoyed' again," she said tapping his temple with her fingertip. "You are not stupid, you knew telling a girl she's pretty when she's sleeping would put you in good stead, just like the way you use your eye's with that 'hurt puppy dog' look to get sympathy, so don't even try to tell me you were surprised at the response."
"Guess I'm caught... have to work out something new..."
"Yes you were caught, but I still love you for trying..."
"Love you too."
"I know you do Johnny, now how are you feeling this morning?"
Johnny took a few minutes to assess his body, tentatively moving each limb a little to see what hurt and what didn't. "Except for my shoulder and my side by my left hip, much better," he reported. "Still hurt all over, but not as bad, mostly just sore when I move."
"Your shoulder and side are where the buckle cut you and the doctor bandaged them, he put tape, I think he called it 'butterfly' tapes on the cuts to hold them closed until they heal. Almost all of the welts are gone, but you still have some bruising that's black and blue, but even a lot of that has faded." Debbie told him.
"All I know is it doesn't hurt as much as it did..."
"So, now that I'm up and awake, what do you need or want?"
"Bathroom..."
"Number 1 or 2?"
"1"
"Well until Mom checks you, I'm not letting you out of bed, so I'll get the pitcher."
Johnny managed to ease himself to the edge of the bed and peed in the pitcher she held for him, then eased back onto the center of the bed. "Thanks" he mumbled as he blushed.
"Are you ever going to stop being embarrassed by letting me help you with that?"
"Probably not, but I'm getting used to it."
"Well at least that's SOME progress. Now, are you hungry?"
"Almost always, but you knew that when you asked."
"Guess I've been caught too." She chuckled as she left to empty the pitcher and get him some food.
Debbie returned a few minutes later, accompanied by her mother and Nancy. "Good morning sunshine," Kay greeted him.
"Morning Kay!"
"I'm going to check you over and change your bandages before we get to breakfast, so just relax. OK?"
"OK... don't have any choice anyway."
"My, My aren't we having a pity party this morning," Kay chuckled as she lifted the blanket from him and started looking over his back.
"No just dealing with my fate..." Johnny mumbled.
Kay gave his behind a little pat with her hand as she felt the bruises still there, "And dealing with it just fine Johnny, so relax and I'll get this over quickly."
"OK" he sighed and relaxed while she touched and probed his backside, then removed and changed the bandages, and applied more of the medicated cream to a few spots.
"You're healing nicely," Kay reported, both of the cuts are closed up and healing and most of the bruising will be gone by this evening. Let's see if we can get you sitting so you can eat your breakfast sitting up. Nancy give me a hand, will you?"
"Sure Mom, how do you want to do it?"
"Ok Johnny I want to get you rolled onto your side, then we will move your legs towards me so they overhang the bed, then we're going to lift you from your left side until you are sitting. Nancy get near the head of the bed and once we turn him, lift using only his left shoulder, you can push if you want, once he's clear of the mattress, but don't put any stress on that right shoulder where the bandage is."
"I understand Mom," she replied as she got into position.
Kay lifted his right side, using pressure only on his chest and right knee, until he was on his side; then swiftly hooked his legs at the knees and pulled them to her so they overhung the bed, "Now lift Nancy," she said as she guided him, while Nancy was doing the actual lifting. Suddenly, he was sitting up on the edge of the bed and other than a couple of twinges, it had been painless.
"That was slick Mom," Nancy observed, "How did you learn to do that?"
"Nursing in a Hospital, gives you lot's of practice Honey, I worked in the post-op ward for three years and had to deal with all kinds of injuries."
"Should I get his breakfast now?" Debbie asked from the doorway.
"How do you feel Johnny, any dizziness?" Kay asked
"No, I'm OK, glad to get off my stomach, I hate sleeping in that position."
"Good, now I don't want you getting up without help until we're sure you're up to it, just sit if you want, but be very careful about leaning against anything. Yes Debbie he can have breakfast now," she said looking back over her shoulder to the girl.
"Thanks Kay," Johnny said and tried to lean forward enough to kiss her cheek, but the bandage at his side pulled, "Ouch!"
"Don't do that Johnny, No extended movements until that side is healed," she said as she leaned in and kissed him. "I know what you wanted to do, and I love you for it, but you're not up to that yet. Now just relax and Debbie will be here in no time with your breakfast." She ordered as she rose and patted his cheek.
Ten minutes later Debbie arrived carrying a 'TV Tray' with his breakfast, Nancy had stayed with him until Debbie returned and helped position the tray stand before him, then left when Debbie sat beside him. Johnny started to reach with his right hand, but stopped half way when he was stabbed in the shoulder. "Don't," Debbie told him, "let me cut the French toast for you then use your left hand to eat, you can't reach far enough with your right hand without pulling on your wound."
Debbie cut up the toast for him and handed him the fork, and turned the plate so the bacon was on the left side for him to pickup with his fingers. Johnny tried several different grips on the fork, but had trouble controlling it. Finally he laid it down and picked up a piece of bacon and munched on it.
"What's wrong?" Debbie asked hugging him gently around his waist.
"I'll have to work on using my left hand; I'm right handed you know and I've never tried using a fork left handed."
Debbie picked up the fork and stabbed two pieces of the French toast and held it up as the syrup dripped off, then smiling at him said, 'Open Wide!" and raised the fork towards his mouth. Johnny opened his mouth and she poked the food into his mouth, giggling as she did so. "Feeling like a toddler?" she asked the obviously embarrassed boy.
"Yeah," he said with his mouth full.
"Don't," she responded, "I love helping you like this. It makes me feel needed." She whispered then kissed his cheek.
"I'll always need you Deb, but I hate feeling helpless..."
"You're not completely helpless, it's just temporary, so relax and let me baby you while you can, that, will make us both feel better. Now open wide, here comes the choo choo!"
"OK" he mumbled while smiling at her with his mouth full.
Debbie wiped a couple dribbles of syrup from his chin and shoveled another fork load into his mouth, then he ate some bacon, before she continued feeding him. Finally, his plate was clean and he was rewarded with a big kiss, which included Debbie licking syrup from his lips and chin.
"Thanks," Johnny said when she pulled away and began moving the tray away and over by the door.
"You're welcome," she said grinning, "I enjoyed taking care of my big boy. I'll be right back as soon as I get rid of these dishes" she said as she removed the tray from the stand and headed out the door.
Johnny sat there wondering what he was supposed to do with himself sitting on the edge of his bed with his hands in his lap.
When she returned, Johnny looked up as she bounced into the room, obviously a happy girl. "Debbie, I want to move so I can lean back on some pillows or something, so I can read, but I think I need help. I'd like to read but sitting here like this won't be comfortable..."
Debbie crossed to him and holding his head in her hands gave him a big kiss, "Thanks for asking, obviously you're learning. Just stay still and I'll get help and some more pillows."
Debbie was back a couple of minutes later carrying a pile of pillows with Nancy trailing in her wake. When he saw Nancy, he sighed and looked up at her; "Nancy since you're here, I need to use the toilet before changing to a different position... would you help me?"
Nancy stood before him, looking down with hands on hips before responding. "Daddy said you would ask after last night but I didn't believe him. Yes Johnny you know I will help you anyway I can, and am very happy to do it." She then knelt before him looking up into his face, as the boy blushed, she reached out and held his chin so she could look eye-to-eye before continuing, "Thank you for asking, you have nothing to be embarrassed about, not ever with me." She followed her statement with a kiss to his cheek, and wiped a tear leaking down his cheek with her hand.
Nancy changed positions and squatted between his legs, then leaned in and told him to hold around her neck, as she hooked under both thighs and stood up, tilting him against her chest, his head above her shoulder. "Ouch!" Johnny moaned in her ear.
"Am I hurting you?" she asked as she stood there suspending him his legs around her hips.
"Not you, but something you're wearing, I'm not sure what it is, but it's digging into my balls."
Nancy quickly carried him to the bathroom and sat him on the toilet, then both of them looked at her front to see what caused the problem. Nancy was wearing a thin belt, and the small buckle was apparently the problem, she immediately took the belt off and then knelt before him and shoved his legs open and inspected his scrotum, her finger gently rubbing the little red spot she found. "No permanent damage, not cut either; sorry about that Johnny, I didn't even remember I was wearing it."
Johnny reached down and massaged his balls when she let go then almost whispered, "It's OK Nancy, I didn't see it either; it's not your fault."
Nancy kissed his cheek then said, "I'll leave you alone now, when you're done, just call me and I'll come get you OK?"
"Thanks Nancy I really appreciate your help."
Nancy left him alone and it was about 10 minutes before she decided she'd better check on him; "You OK Johnny?" she called from the hallway.
When he didn't answer, she looked in and found him still sitting on the toilet, his hands over his face crying. "Johnny what the matter?" she asked kneeling before him.
"I... I can't reach ... to...to wipe... myself.." he sobbed.
"Oh Johnny... don't cry it's no big deal," she said hugging his head, "Just relax and I'll take care of it for you." She didn't say anymore, she just opened his legs then took some toilet paper and reaching under him, wiped him, then repeated the process twice more until the paper came back clean, then reached around him and flushed the toilet. After washing her hands, she returned to the still crying boy and picked him up like before and carried him back to Debbie's room, his head buried on her shoulder, tears still streaming from his eyes as he sobbed into her neck.
Instead of putting him down, she sat on Debbie's bed with him still wrapped around her like a toddler and gently held him letting him drain the emotions out as he continued to cry. Debbie immediately rushed over but Nancy gave her head a small shake to indicate not to intervene; Debbie nodded assent but stood nervously watching her best friend crying his heart out on her sister's shoulder. Debbie finally couldn't wait any more and left to get her mother, and both immediately returned. When she saw her mother, Nancy inched a finger to her lips and gave a small shake of her head again. Nancy stroked him as best she could without hitting any sore spots and continued holding him until Johnny was finally exhausted from crying and dozed on her shoulder. When she was sure he was asleep, she nodded to her mother, and the three women gently placed the boy back on the bed, only half sitting against a giant pile of pillows, and covered his relaxed body.
Nancy and her mother stepped out into the hallway, while Debbie stayed with Johnny.
"What happened?" Kay asked her crying middle daughter.
"I left him alone in the bathroom to do his business, but when he didn't call me after ten minutes, I checked on him, and he was just sitting there crying his heart out. He couldn't wipe himself in the toilet and had to ask me for help. He was an emotional wreck when he asked, then couldn't seem to recover at all, so I did it for him, then brought him back, but he was crying and trembling and I couldn't just put him down, so I held him until he finally gave out. I didn't know what else to do Mom!"
Kay hugged her crying daughter, "You did exactly the right thing." She softly replied, "He had to ask a girl to do one of the most intimate things possible for a boy, and it broke through that tough veneer boys and men have; he couldn't deal with that so he lost his emotional control and had to let it out. All you did was let him release all that pent up emotion safely; he needed that badly and you gave him what he needed, so don't feel bad, it wasn't anything you did to cause it."
"That may be Mom, but it sure scared the hell out of me. I... I've never seen a boy break down like that..."
"You may never see it again sweetheart; men are very good at hiding their real feelings from everyone. That he let you see it at all tells me he loves you very much, or he would have forced it down deep inside and tried to 'tough it out'; but that just makes in worse in the long run."
"Will he be OK then?"
"Yes, releasing that will help him in the long run, but I need to warn you he will be very embarrassed the next time he sees you. You saw him at his very weakest, and he'll remember that. You'll need to tread lightly and let him know, you love him and don't think any less of him, or he won't be able to face you in the future. Right now he has no self-esteem as far as dealing with you."
"God Mom, why does everything have to be so hard for him, he's such a nice guy and I do love him, I just wish he could get a few breaks, he needs them so bad."
"We all feel that way baby, all we can do is give him our love and support and help him get through all this. Now why don't you go lay down for awhile, this was draining on you too, and you need to rest."
"Thanks Mom, you're right that took a lot out of me." She replied and after a kiss and hug from her mother, went to her room and collapsed on her bed.
Kay stuck her head inside the room and motioned for her youngest daughter to step out in the hallway then explained to Debbie what had happened. Debbie cried too and hugged her mother for a while. "Now just go sit with him and when he wakes, let him know you love him and don't mention the incident unless he brings it up. If he does, then you need to be supportive and try and build up his self image; he probably feels he doesn't have one at this point. For one thing we don't know whether he saw you in the room so we don't know if he thinks anyone other than Nancy saw his emotional low point. So for now, play dumb unless he acknowledges that you saw it. Does that make any sense?"
"Yeah it does Mom, I don't think he saw me or knew I was there..."
"If he didn't know you were there, then it will be easier for him to be open with you, except for this incident; Nancy is in a totally different position. He knows he broke down not only in front of her but that she had to help him when it happened, that's going to be harder for both of them to deal with."
"I understand Mom, I'll help him all I can..."
"Good now go back and if nothing else just be there when he wakes up."
It was several hours before Johnny stirred and seemed confused when he opened his eyes. "Hello there sleepyhead," Debbie said with a big smile as she took his hand in hers and gave it a little squeeze.
"Hello Deb," he mumbled then noticed he was sitting in bed, against a pile of pillows, "How... how did I get here?"
"You've been sleeping there for hours..."
"I... I remember Nancy taking me to the bathroom... but I don't remember how... I got back..."
"Well don't worry about it, you got back then went to sleep; sleep I might add you obviously needed and now you're awake with me." She said with a smile.
Johnny squeezed her hand, then lifted it and kissed her hand before lowering it but still holding on to it. "Have I told you how much I love you today?"
"You may have mumbled something sometime today, but you know Johnny, you can never tell a girl how much you love her too much," she said with a giggle at the end.
"Then lean over here so I can kiss you and tell you again," he grinned and pulled on her arm.
Debbie leaned in and keeping her weight off him, kissed him deeply as each told the other how much they were loved. Debbie was still sitting on the bed her head resting lightly on his left shoulder when her mother stuck her head in the door.
"Are you two ready for some lunch?" Kay asked as she smiled at the two on the bed.
"Kay, if you cooked it, you know I'm ready for it," Johnny responded with a smile, "After all some people," and emphasized who with a tap on Debbie head, "claim I'm a bottomless pit or something."
"Well then let's fill that pit up!" Kay responded, "I'll be right back with lunch."
"I'll help Mom," Debbie called and rushed to follow her mother.
Down in the kitchen, she stopped her mother. "He says he doesn't remember anything from Nancy taking him to the bathroom, until he woke."
"Maybe... or maybe he's fishing to see what YOU know." Kay observed.
"Oh... hadn't thought of that."
"Regardless, at some point he will remember, even if he doesn't right now. Probably when he sees Nancy. He may be burying it in his sub-conscious for now, refusing to face it. Just know that sooner or later, it will hit him and he will have a hard time dealing with it."
Debbie carried the food laden tray up to her room, and pulled the tray stand over to the bed. Lunch was submarine sandwiches with potato chips and Johnny managed to feed himself. When they were both finished, Debbie gave him his pain pills, then returned the tray to the kitchen. When, she went back up to her room and found Johnny with his book open on his lap, dozing again, his head slumped back on a pillow. She removed the book and adjusted the pillows to give his head more support then returned to her chair and watched him sleep. When Nancy relieved her at 3:00, Johnny was still sleeping and they stepped out to the hallway and she briefed her sister on her discussion with Johnny and also her mother's thoughts.
Nancy assumed the bedside duty and was apprehensive when Johnny started to stir.
"Nancy?" Johnny softly asked.
"Yes Johnny, I'm here," she responded in an equally soft voice.
"I'm sorry..."
"You don't have anything to be sorry about Johnny, I love you very much and I just did what you needed."
"But... But I shouldn't have... "
Nancy crossed to him and sat on the bed so they could see each other, tears were leaking down his cheeks, and she reached out and wiped them.
"There is nothing you shouldn't have asked or done, you are my friend and have every right to ask anything of me. As my friend, I owe you that much, so forget what happened, I don't think less of you for anything that may have happened."
"But..."
"Sssh! Everything is OK, I love you and I'm proud of you, you are much stronger than me, maybe not physically but I could never endure what you've been through. So don't think less of yourself. You needed help and I helped you, case closed."
Johnny reached for her and she leaned in and gently hugged him as he did his best to hug her, both were crying on each other's shoulders for several minutes, kissing each other's cheeks and necks. Finally, she pulled back a little, "You OK now?"
"Yeah...I...I don't know how to thank you..."
"You just did, so let's wipe your face so you can face my beautiful sister when she brings your dinner in a little while, like the strong, terrific guy you are."
Johnny sniffed then blew his nose on a tissue, then Nancy leaned over and kissed his lips, while patting his head. By the time Debbie brought dinner up, he and Nancy were sitting there playing cards, and laughing at each other's jokes.
After dinner Johnny was left alone reading in bed, while a family conference was held in the den. "It's over," Nancy announced, "He remembered everything and just about broke down again trying to apologize. We talked about it and I assured him I still think he's a strong and terrific guy deserving our love and respect. I told him the matter was closed and he had nothing to be concerned about."
Kay let out a big sigh, "Well that sounds good let's just be prepared for it to surface again. I hope you're right about his acceptance Nancy, but I have doubts. He may have just said what he thought you wanted to hear, men do that at times to avoid issues."
Later that evening, Nancy was sitting with him again and he looked much better. "Nancy, I need to get to the bathroom again... I think I can make it myself this time, but...would you go with me... just in case?"
"You know I will Johnny, do you need help getting up?"
"Well let me see..."
Johnny uncovered himself and inched over to a sitting position on the edge of the bed, "So far so good," he mumbled and tried to find a way to lift himself to a standing position. "Shit! Could you help me stand? I think once I'm up I'll make it to the bathroom, but everything I try to get up hurts; it's probably going to be the same trying to sit."
Nancy got on his left side and lifted as he attempted to stand, then walked him to the bathroom and took part of his weight as he sat on the toilet, then went out of the room and waited until she heard him call "Nancy, I'm done."
She entered and again helped him stand, then escorted him back to the room, but before he got to the edge of the bed, he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her, then laid his head on her shoulder. "Thank you Nancy, you the greatest friend I could have!"
"It was nothing Johnny, but how could I not help a wonderful guy like you, besides I have to make sure you live to be my brother-in-law or Debbie will kill me."
Both of them laughed and she helped him back into bed, then kissed his forehead and ruffled his hair before returning to her chair by the bed.
At about 10:00 he took his pain pills and was soon sleepy, Nancy removed some of the pillows and straightened his body, then covered him and turned out the lights and left him alone in the room. As she was leaving, a sleepy voice said, "Thanks Nancy, I love you."
"I love you too Johnny, now go to sleep."
"OK...night..."
"Good night Johnny."
Chapter 41 Thursday
It was very early when Johnny woke, the room was still dim and a little chilly, he assessed his body and other than the two bandaged areas, felt much better, he tried moving some and found he could shift himself about relatively painlessly. So he decided to go to the bathroom. Swinging his legs around, he was sitting on the edge and found that by leaning left and pushing with that hand, he could get up to a standing position. He gingerly walked across the room, still assessing each movement to see what hurt. When he made it to the bathroom, he washed his face, and looked at his back in the wall mirror. Two bandages were visible, one high on his right shoulder, the other low on his left back, otherwise, the only damage he could see was some dark areas, where the bruising was still healing. Tears filled his eyes when he looked at himself remembering how it had happened, his body trembled, as he whimpered "Mom, how could you do that..."
Debbie woke when she heard water running in the bathroom and looked over to the bed and saw Johnny was gone. Almost in a panic she jumped up and ran across the hall and found Johnny standing at the sink crying, gripping the sink by it's sides, when she heard the boy whimper about his mother. She immediately crossed to him and hugged him from behind, laying her head on his left shoulder as she held him tightly. "It's OK Johnny, you're safe, no one will hurt you..." she murmured to him as she could feel him trembling.
Johnny turned inside her arms and Debbie felt the movement and loosened her grip enough to let him turn completely around until he faced her then she pulled him to her, finding an area in the center of his back bandage free, but held him loosely to avoid pressure on any bruises. Johnny laid his head on her shoulder as she kissed his temple, cheek and neck. They just stood there holding each other until he finally regained control. "Thanks Deb, I... I needed that," he whispered.
"You OK now?"
"Yeah... but I still need to pee..."
"Need help?"
"No...I'll be OK... I'll be back in a minute..."
"OK, I'll go wait in our room for you."
"OK"
Debbie returned to her room and sat nervously on her regular bed and waited. A few minutes later she heard the toilet flush and soon Johnny slowly walked back into the room and sat beside her on the edge of the bed. Debbie smiled at him as he sat down and reached to take hold of his hand, in both of hers, playing with his fingers for a minute before speaking.
"You must be feeling better since you didn't need help getting up."
"Much better, still sore and the tape on those bandages pulls when I move, but overall, yes; much better."
"Well that's good to hear! What...what happened in the bathroom?"
"I... I saw my back in the mirror, and....and I couldn't understand how she could do that to me..."
"Johnny she wasn't in her right mind...she's sick mentally."
"Doesn't make any difference, I HATE her, I don't ever want to see her again!"
"Johnny please promise me one thing."
"Anything, you know that."
"Don't make any final decisions about you and your mother until you understand what happened with her; wait until after you talk to the doctor, Please."
"If you want, I'll wait... but I can't think of anything he could say that will make me ever want to see or be near her again.."
"Just please don't make any decisions final, that's all I'm asking."
"OK Deb, I love you so much."
"I love you too Johnny, now since we're up, I assume you're hungry."
"Someone else is learning, yeah always!"
"Well in that case, if you feel up to it, let's go down to the kitchen and I'll fix some breakfast."
"OK," and both rose and slowly moved out of the room, Johnny setting the pace.
An hour later, Kay found them in the kitchen sitting before empty plates, quietly talking and holding hands.
"You look much better Johnny, it good to see you feel up to getting out of bed and coming down here for breakfast." Kay observed.
"I do feel better Kay, and I sure am glad to be out of bed."
"Wonderful! Now let me get a cup of coffee to get my old system jump-started, then I'll take a look under those bandages and see how those cuts are doing."
"You're NOT old, Kay!"
"That! Young man just earned you a kiss!" she said as she cupped his head and placed big kiss on him.
Kay drank a cup of coffee while they all sat at the table and the two kids continued quietly talking about various things, and watched them interacting with each other. 'This is moving VERY fast,' Kay thought, "I need to get her on the pill quickly regardless of how much I trust them.'
When she was done with her coffee, Kay had Johnny turn sideways in his chair so his back was exposed. She then gently removed the bandages and checked his entire back, but especially the two cuts. "Johnny these cuts are healing very quickly, I think we can leave the bandages off, but I'm going to leave the butterfly tape on for a couple more days. Debbie go get the medicated cream, and I'll put some on the cuts, to help with them, that cream will help with local pain and prevent possible infection."
"Be right back Mom!" Debbie called as she quickly left the room.
Debbie was back in less than a minute and handed her mother the cream, which Kay then applied to the cuts. "There Johnny, all done, now just take it easy today and tomorrow and I think we can remove the tape on Saturday at the rate it's healing. Just don't be doing any lifting that will pull at those wounds, or anything that causes pain. Understand?"
"Yes Kay, I'll behave myself. Nothing that causes pain; that's easy and no lifting or pulling at the cuts."
"All done then." Kay announced as she stroked his upper arms and leaning over his shoulder, kissing his cheek. "You are a wonderful patient son, you follow directions and don't make things harder for those trying to help you. Now why don't you two relax and let me clean up my kitchen. If you are going to sit other than in bed, use a pillow behind you to keep hard pressure off those wounds."
"Thank you Kay I will. Kay, you're a great nurse, nothing
you've done since.. since this happened, caused any pain;
you're very gentle."
"I try Johnny, but you can't expect all medical treatments
to be painless, that's not reasonable. But you are an easy
patient and most of what I had to do wasn't that bad."
Johnny stood up and turned, then hugged the woman again mumbling his thanks. Kay returned his hug and then ruffled his hair, "Now get out of my kitchen." She chuckled as she released him and gave him a small push in the direction of her daughter.
The sun was up and it was a warm day, so Debbie and Johnny decided to spend the morning out on the patio. There was an extra wide chase lounge and Debbie got two pillows from her room and put them on the chair. She helped Johnny position himself on the seat and handed him his book.
"Sit here with me," Johnny told the still standing girl, "there's lots of room and I like sitting with you."
Debbie didn't need a second invitation. She quickly filled the empty area and cuddled up against her favorite boy, then they spent several hours reading his book together.
Chuck came out while they were sitting together and stopped only for a few seconds to say hello on his way to the garage before going to work. Inside, Kay, Vicky and Nancy watched the two contented Kids on the patio as they ate their breakfast.
"Mom, you know I get jealous watching them," Vicky said almost sadly. "They love each other so much and they are so good together, they think alike on most things and he's such a great guy."
"They are good for each other," Kay offered, "But don't you worry, Vicky, you'll find the right guy for you and will be just as happy as your sister."
"I know... It's just after being around Johnny all the time, I tend to judge other boys in comparison to him; he's so sweet to us girls and never ever does anything to hurt us. He's not into that macho male thing at all, he's so innocent some times yet very strong at others; how am I supposed to find another boy like that?"
"Slowly and carefully," Kay responded. "You girls have known Johnny since you were very little, so don't rush into a relationship thinking the boy will be like Johnny. Get to know all about them before doing anything serious; none will be just like Johnny but you need to find one compatible with you. After all you and your sister have differences in your personalities and interests, so don't expect a total copy of Johnny to be what you want or need. You need to find the boy that matches with you like he does with your sister."
"I guess you're right, but it's just so hard...:
"It always has been daughter and that will never change as long as there are men and women."
"Well I better get down to the Church, I'm teaching at the Vacation Day School today; maybe I can get a certain boy down there even notice that I exist." The frustrated girl said.
"Oh he knows you exist, and from what I've seen has an
interest!" Kay responded.
"Really? But he's never made any moves in that direction."
"Sometimes it's necessary for us women to make the first move, some men are afraid to initiate anything no matter how they feel about us. Just be friendly and get him talking about himself; if he feels comfortable doing that, then he's more likely to make that move you want. Be a good listener, boys like to talk about themselves and what they think. The hard part is getting them to talk about how they feel."
"Thanks Mom, that sounds promising! Bye now see you at dinner."
"Good luck Vicky, see you later."
"You've been unusually quiet," Kay said to her remaining daughter.
"Just sitting back learning from my very smart and wise mother..."
"I don't know how smart and wise your mother is but she DOES know about people and relationships. So what's my number two daughter thinking?"
"Kind of like Vicky, I tend to compare boys to Johnny; God I love the boy so much! He's so smart, and kind and...sometimes so strong... and others so vulnerable. I just want to protect him and hug the stuffing out of him; if it weren't for the fact that Debbie's my sister, no girl would get close to him."
"Nancy you need to remember that, well to be honest, you are a very intimidating person to many boys out there. Your physical strength itself, will scare off some boys, other's like Johnny will admire you for that strength. If you don't want to intimidate a boy you need to show him your soft, female side in addition to that physical strength. You are a very loving person, but you don't show that very often. Remember, most men are used to being the physically stronger person in a relationship, they are afraid to deal with a woman who can physically dominate them unless they know the woman loves them and won't hurt them. Just like we women tend to look for a man we are sure won't hurt us if they are the stronger."
"I hadn't considered that, but now that you mention it, yeah, some boys seem to run away from me almost on sight, even though I've never done anything to hurt anyone of them. Other's like me but don't make any advances; they must be afraid of me and what might happen if I turned them down or laughed at them. I guess I need to be more open with them and let them know it's ok to approach me."
"Just be yourself, you are already a lovely woman and care about people; but sometimes you are the female version of a macho male; that's what's intimidating. Remember, it's not how big or strong a man is that makes a good match, it's what's between his ears. What and how does he think and how does he feel about you. If he truly loves you, the fact that you are physically bigger or stronger won't make any difference to him, if he knows you feel the same way about him."
"But what about sex?"
"Ninety percent of sex is in the brain, if you haven't figured that out, you still have a lot to learn. Any man can give you pleasure, if you and he want him to. No matter what size his...uh...equipment might be, he can please you that way, if you love him and he wants to return that love. The key to good sex is first a good relationship and each partner really caring about the other. I'll admit that a quick purely physical relationship may feel good at the time; but it won't last long and you'll leave it feeling down, because of the lack of emotional ties."
"That's an awful lot to think about, I suppose I need to review my thoughts and feelings about boys and how I deal with them."
"That's a good start, but don't worry yourself to death about it; you will find the right guy if you just show them the real Nancy."
"Thanks Mom, I'm going to go workout now and do some thinking."
"Anytime Honey, I'm always here when you need to talk."
Nancy stood and hugged and kissed her mother then meandered off, to start her daily exercises.
Outside, Johnny and Debbie were still sitting on the chase lounge when two visitors arrived. "Hi Johnny! Good to see you're up out of bed" Susan said with a big smile as she and Becky walked onto the patio.
Becky ran to him even before he could respond and wrapped her arms around his head hugging him to her chest.
"Easy Becky!" Debbie warned, "watch out for his shoulder, where that tape is."
"Oh I'm so sorry!" the girl whimpered, "I didn't mean to hurt you Johnny."
"I'm OK Becky," He softly said, and scooped the girl with his arm and guided her around the arm of the chair. "Here sit on my lap," and guided her down onto himself, then hugged her leaning back against his chest. "I'm happy to see you too," he said as he kissed the top of her head.
Becky shifted a little so she could look up at him, then a tear ran down her cheek as she continued, "Everyone was so worried about you after we heard what happened. I was really scared for you."
Johnny wiped the tear from her cheek and stroked her head, "I'll be fine Becky, so don't you worry about me. OK?"
"OK..." Becky replied, then turned on her side so she could bury her face in the side of his neck and curled up on his lap. Johnny just held her around her shoulders and patted her hip with his free hand. When he looked at Debbie, she was just sitting beside him, watching with a big grin on her face. But her hand snuck down and patted his thigh.
"Wow Susan you look great!" he said when he got a chance to look up and see her standing beside him wearing very tight white shorts and a halter top, her long tan legs emphasized by the shorter than average shorts.
"Why thank you Johnny, you look like you're coming along," she said as she bent over him and kissed his cheek, then let her fingers linger playing with his hair.
"Yeah, finally got out of that bed and can get around some; Kay says the tape will be off on Saturday and I should be able to get back to some kind of normal life then."
"Well that's great, I was so worried when she called Tuesday morning and told me the class had to be cancelled, and what happened. The girls were all disappointed, but concerned about you when I called each of them."
"I'll be OK, tell them not to worry about me and we'll set it up for some other time once I get the OK to return to normal activities."
"I will Johnny and it's so nice of you to still do that for them, they'll all be excited."
"No problem, I really don't mind helping out, as long as they need it and I'm not treated like an object or something."
"That won't happen Johnny, when I called them Tuesday, everyone of them without exception, were worried that you were hurt and wanted me to tell you to get better, they care about you and some of them don't even know you at all. They thought you were a great guy to even let them have the class, even before this happened."
"That's cuz it IS a great guy." Becky mumbled with her head still tucked into the crook of his neck. Johnny gave her shoulders a squeeze and stroked her side ending in another pat on the hip, in thanks for her opinion.
"Yes he is Becky and we all love him for it," Susan responded still playing with his hair.
Susan sat on the edge of the lounge and she, Johnny and Debbie quietly talked for about 20 minutes, while Becky just lay there snuggled up against her friend, her fingers tracing little designs on his chest.
Finally Susan rose and shook herself out, "Come on Becky we have to go now and leave Johnny so he can get well."
Becky very reluctantly sat up but before getting from his lap, kissed Johnny on the mouth, and whispered "Get well soon, Johnny we miss you."
Johnny returned her chaste kiss, and said, "I will Becky now you take care of yourself," then helped her get off him, without accidentally hitting any sensitive parts like his balls.
Susan leaned down and gave him another kiss, before taking Becky by the hand and leading her away, "Bye Johnny, see you later..."
"Bye Susan, Bye Becky," Johnny called as Susan lead the now quiet young girl away.
As they walked out of sight, Debbie hooked her arm through his and clasp his hand in hers' then leaned over and kissed his cheek. "That was nice Johnny, you are so good with her and don't even realize it; Becky is a lucky little girl to have you as a friend."
"I don't understand?"
"I know you don't and that's one of the things I love about you. You do naturally what most guys would have to think about. You give that little girl what she needs without even having to consider what to do. I'm so proud of you, and love you very much."
"Love you too," he responded, and gave her a quick kiss in return, "But I still don't understand..."
Debbie just giggled, and pinched his cheek lightly, "Don't worry about it, just keep doing what you've been doing lover boy and let me worry about it."
"Uh... Ok...I guess?"
"Lunch!" Kay called from the backdoor.
"Coming!" Johnny called back and the two got up and went inside to eat.
"Johnny you've been laid up now for three days, you need to move around some more if you feel up to it, instead of just sitting around," Nancy suggested.
"Good idea, Nancy," Kay interjected, "Why don't you take Johnny for a walk after lunch, it won't hurt his back and he should get a little exercise to keep his muscles up."
"Ok," Johnny responded, "As soon as we're done, I'm up for it."
After lunch Nancy put his shoes on for him; as she was leading Johnny out the back door, with Debbie trailing. Kay stopped them. "Debbie I need you to stay here and give me a hand, Nancy can take care of him for awhile."
"Uh...OK Mom, See you later Johnny," she said as Nancy continued on leading Johnny by the hand.
"And WHAT was that about?" a frustrated Debbie said confronting her mother.
"Settle down! This was the first chance I've had to get you alone all day. Now report! What is our boy thinking? I know his physical condition, I need to know how he's doing here (pointing to her temple)"
"Sorry Mom, I didn't mean to sound cross with you." Debbie said as she sat heavily in a chair at the table. "The short version is I found him in the bathroom crying this morning after he saw his back in the mirror, wondering how his mother could do that to him. I got him calmed down and he told me he can't understand it; but that he hates his mother and doesn't want to see her again. I got him to hold of on any decisions like that until he's well and the doctor has a chance to explain what happened with his mother. He knows she had a mental breakdown and wasn't in her right mind, but he doesn't see any way he can forgive her."
"I thought as much," Kay responded, "He was hurt more mentally than physically, but even the physical part was bad enough." Kay quietly thought for a minute before continuing, "I'm afraid Deb, that Liz may have completely destroyed any possible relationship with her son, no matter what she or anyone else says to him."
"That Bad?"
"I'm afraid it might be; their relationship will never
return to what it was before this. At best, he may forgive
her, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon. To have the
person who is supposed to love you and protect you more than
any other do that to you, is a deep wound; one that might
never heal. Even if it does, he may be middle aged before
he can forgive that; I've seen it too many times."
"Is there anything we can do?"
"Just support him and give him all our love and affection. We can help him try to understand she was mentally ill, but that's academic to him. The love and trust he felt for her has been destroyed and it's a long, slow process to try and recover any of it, if he ever can."
The Mother and daughter spent a long time crying for the boy and trying to comfort each other hugging tightly in the kitchen.
Nancy and Johnny slowly walked the circuit they normally ran, Nancy letting him set the pace. Her arm slipped around him holding him at his waist on his right side as they walked together, not saying anything just being together was enough for now. As they reached the back part of the property, Johnny was proceeding very with caution, when Nancy decided he needed to rest a minute.
"Let's sit a minute," Nancy suggested and sat on a log, then guided him onto her lap.
"Buttons!" Johnny said with a wince.
"OK get up a minute." Johnny stood and Nancy quickly removed her blouse and bra, leaving her bare chested. "Now sit here, I guarantee, nothing is left to aggravate your back." She said with a giggle.
Johnny sat down and could feel her soft breasts pressing into him. "Best seat I could ever ask for," he snickered.
"If you weren't hurt, I might think you just said that so you could feel my tits; then I might have to punish such a bad boy."
"Nancy I would NEVER do that! The buttons really did hurt."
"Oh yes you would! Remember Bucko, I've known you a long time and I know how you think! If you thought you could get away with it; you would do exactly that, cuz I know how much you like titty's." she chuckled and then hugged him, "But I love you anyway." Then kissed his red cheek.
"Oh My, now he's all embarrassed." She continued as she gently held him and stroked his body. "Johnny you have nothing to be embarrassed about, I like it that you like my body, you can play with these tits anytime you want, and you don't need to feel ashamed about liking to do it."
"Really?"
"Oh geez there are those 'puppy dog eyes' Debbie talks about, yes REALLY! I love you Johnny and it's not a big deal."
Johnny's left hand snuck out and gently lifted her right breast, his fingertips playing with the nipple which quickly responded to his touch. He then cupped it and gave it a gentle squeeze, before playing with the nipple some more. "Your skin is so soft," he murmured, "and breasts are so neat!"
"Yeah, I kinda like having them, now are you going to play with it all afternoon or do we walk some more."
"Do we have to?"
"Yes we do, we came out here to get you some exercise, not for you to play with tits."
"Oh, OK if you insist, but I really do like your breasts, they're great."
"Thank you Johnny, now let's get up and get walking again."
Nancy helped him up, then put her blouse back on but didn't bother with the bra, which she just made into a ball and stuck in her pocket. Then wrapped her arm around him and guided him on down the path. They walked around the circuit three times before Nancy decided he'd had enough and lead him back to the house. Debbie looked anxious as they entered the back door and immediately took his arm and looked him over.
"Don't worry Sis, I didn't break him, see all in one piece and no new injuries." Nancy said amused at her sister's reaction.
Johnny just stood there looking back and forth between the two sisters trying to figure out what it was all about.
Nancy answered his unasked question. "Don't look so confused Johnny, Debbie loves you very much and was worried you might get injured, when not in her tender loving care."
"Oh Nancy!" Debbie spat.
"It's true!" Nancy said with a giggle. "Now that you have him back, I'll leave him to you Sis," she continued as she patted Johnny's arm and walked away.
"You look tired, why don't we let you lie down and rest. Do you need any pain pills?" Debbie anxiously asked.
"I'm fine Debbie, but I could lie down for awhile."
"Ok, then let's get you up to my bed." She said as she led him upstairs.
Johnny slept the next few hours until dinner time.
