Part 3
It started about year ago. When I was nine.
Something
was up. As usual, the school skyhook put me down in the front
yard. As usual I went in the front door. But not as usual,
my mother was there waiting for me with a big smile. She never
met me when I get home from school: she was always too busy with her
projects.
‘Ma, what is it?’ I asked.
‘Daniel,’ she answered, ‘I have to wait until your father gets home before I can tell you.’
‘Okay,’ I said. And as usual I got myself a snack. And went to my room to listen to some tunes.
Why would she meet me at the door like that?
Something was really up. Da came home from work early. He never did that. And he had the same smile as Ma.
‘Da, what is it?’ I asked.
The two of them looked at each other, still smiling.
‘VR Sim for Kids,’ Da said.
‘Never heard of it,’ I replied.
My
parents (like almost every adult I know) had their own VR Sim
units. They would go into them sometimes at night after I was in
bed and do whatever it is that adults do. But I never heard of
kids doing it. Whatever it was.
‘It is a new program,’ Ma
explained. ‘Your father and I have logged a thousand hours in our
VR Sims, so the Company awarded us one of the new kid’s units for
free. Isn’t that wonderful?’
How could I tell whether it was wonderful or not if I didn’t know what a VR Sim was?
‘It is time for dinner now. But afterward, we will take you downstairs and show you how it works.’
*
Our
house had a “Rec Room” in the basement. But now that it had three
VR cubicles in it, there was not much room for any other kind of
recreation.
My new VR Sim for Kids cubicle had been set up beside the two cubicles for my parents. It had “Daniel” written on it.
‘Put
your palm here.’ Da said. Then, after he did a few things on his
phone, ‘OK, it is personalised. Now no one but you can use
it. Whatever happens in there is private, and no one will know.’
Ma
unpacked a box, and took out a child-size headset. It looked sort
of like the headsets we always use for watching the ES upstairs.
But more elaborate. ‘This wireless headset lets you use the VR
Sim. When you are not inside, hang the headset here, and it will
recharge. Let me put it on for you. It’s easy to do.’
There
was a close-fitting skullcap on the top of my head. Goggles on
the front over my eyes. Earplugs on the side for my ears.
And a small microphone near my mouth.
Then I put my palm on my
cubicle, which opened for me. I stepped in. It closed me
in. It was dark for a few seconds. I felt something like
feathers brushing all over my body. And the floor moving to
adjust to my feet.
Then the demo started. I seemed to be
in a large meadow on a spring day. I felt a breeze on my
cheek. A friendly-looking man greeted me.
‘Hello, Daniel. I am Philip.’
He held out his hand to me, and we shook hands the way adults do.
Philip
explained the basics of the VR Sim process. I was not really in a
meadow. I was still in my basement. This was “virtual
reality” or VR. The goggles and earplugs gave me the sights and
sounds of the meadow. The “feathers” I had observed (actually
called “podios”) were used for tactile cues, such as the breeze I was
feeling. Or the handshake. I could even sit down on a chair
simulated by the unit. When I walked or ran, the floor acted like
a treadmill. The unit observed me by light and ultrasound, and
accommodated itself to me. Podios would be constructed,
deconstructed, and reconstructed from the myriad of tiny nanobots that
made up the interior walls of the cubicle. Philip was not a real
person but a “mymic”---a computer-generated character.
And, most
importantly, the skullcap produced “sympathetic brain waves” to induce
certain states in my brain. States something like sleep or
hypnosis. Enhancing a “suspension of disbelief” to make things
seem more real. They call it “SD”.
That was a lot for a nine-year-old to process. Even one who had been using electronics since the cradle.
Then
Philip turned on one of the standard simulations. I went
horseback riding in the steppes of Mongolia. It was great.
I
came out of VR. It had been an hour. I was tired, but
exhilarated. Ma and Da were still there, waiting, with their
smiles.
‘What did you think?’ Ma said.
‘I like it,’ I replied. ‘Can I go back in?’
‘Not
now. Your father and I have these ground rules for you.
Every day after dinner, you can use the VR Sim for up to two hours,
before bedtime. Of course you don’t have to, you can do something
else instead.’
‘Who would ever want to do something else?’
‘That
is the reason for the two hour a day restriction. Some
psychologists fear that without such a restriction, may kids would in
fact never do anything else.’
The main difference between the
child and adult versions of VR Sim was that there was only me, together
with the mymics. The adult version communicated on the Interweb,
so there could be many real people at once, all in VR together.
*
Most
days I did VR for two hours. But really I had only one hour for
myself. The first hour had to be some “educational” drivel.
Only after completing that could I choose my own adventure.
I liked best the interactive stories.
I could be a rock star, performing before an audience of thousands.
I could be a kid in a large family, hiking around on the mountain paths with our nanny, singing: “Doe, a deer, a female deer.”
I
could be a Lost Boy taken by Peter Pan to live in the Neverland.
I could have adventures with pirates, Indians, and mermaids.
I
could be the a boy on Mars in “Where the Golden Apples
Grow”. I live with my father on a long-haul vehicle, bringing ice
from the North Pole back to the settlement, until a runaway boy my own
age shows up.
I could be a boy stranded in the jungles of Africa, raised by apes, destined to become Tarzan.
I could be a boy living in the Shire and attend Bilbo’s extravagant eleventy-first birthday party.
I could be a Dickensian urchin living in the streets of 19th century London.
The
interactivity was the best part. I could change what happens in
the story in any way I wanted. Either by acting it out, or by
speaking to the VR unit to tell it what I wanted. And then the
system would remember my changes, so I could later re-do the scenario
as I had changed it.
For the characters in the stories, I could
get the VR to create mymics looking like people from the real world, as
long as it could find pictures of them on the Interweb.
No wonder some kids never wanted to come out of VR.
*
My
cousin Richard with his family would visit our family a few times a
year. He was nearly a year older than I. He also had a VR
Sim for Kids. So we would tell each other about our favorite VR
games and adventures.
Once, Richard gave me a “cheat code” to
cancel the one hour educational requirement. Using that I could
have two hours of my own adventures every day. I guess the fact
that it is private in there is true. The system never tattled to
my parents that I was skipping the educational programming.
*
Two months ago when Richard was here again, he had another cheat code for me. To override the ratings restrictions.
‘What’s that?’ I asked him.
‘Well, you know, if you are in VR and you want to hit another kid?’
‘No, I never tried that.’
‘Well, the system won’t let you do it. It says “Simulation Terminated” and stops.’
‘Why would I want to hit someone, anyway?’
‘Maybe
its a war game and you want to be in the fighting. There are
other restrictions besides violence. Sex, nudity, foul language,
drug use, racism, misogyny, homophobia, rightist politics, and so on.’
None of those things really interested me. Except nudity. So I tried it. I liked it.
With
some of the standard VR stories, I switched them to make them more
exciting to me by adding nudity. And over time I found what
interested me ... or what interested my body at least. I would
never, ever, go naked in real life (not even in the house with just my
parents there). But in VR I could do it. In private, but
also seemingly in public.
Would boy Tarzan in the jungle with
the apes wear a loincloth? Of course not. I would wear my
PJs when I entered the VR cubicle, but then take them off so I could
feel the jungle all over my body.
I made a scenario for Peter
Pan where the Lost Boys ran around naked in the Neverland. The
pirates and the Indians didn’t approve, but we did it anyway. I
got the VR system to use the bodies (imagined from the images on the
Interweb) of my classmates and friends for the mymics of other
boys. We even convinced Wendy (I called her Martha, after one of
my classmates) to go naked, too!
Richard told me to try an old
British movie, “Lord of the Flies”. Maybe he liked it because of
the violence, but I liked it because I could run around naked.
Before I had the cheat codes, I could not even tell that this movie
ever existed.
As a Dickensian urchin I developed a scenario
where I was captured by a rival crew and stripped naked. The
rival crew of course consisted of mymics of my friends and
classmates. At least as much of them as the system could find on
the web; other details were filled in by the system.
But
there was still an “erogenous touching” restriction. Richard says
he had not found a way around that. But he was looking.

Dinner
as usual. It was one of the traditional things we did every
night: just the three of us, no electronics. Of course the food
was prepared and served by the automatics.
After dinner I went
to my room, undressed (in private of course), and went through the
bather and the medical examiner. Then I put on some sleeping
clothes, and found my parents to say good night. I did VR every
day, and my parents seemed happy to have that time to themselves.
‘What’s that you’re wearing?’ Ma asked. ‘A pair of your father’s old boxers, and a ratty T-shirt?’
‘It’s for a VR story.’
‘Well, have fun!’
I
went down to the Rec Room. I had been repeating “Dickensian
Urchin” for maybe ten days straight, improving it every time. No
sign that I was getting tired of it. My whole body seemed to be
anticipating it.
The VR began. As usual, the cubicle
practically froze me. The podios removed my clothes. When
the story terminated, the cubicle took a minute or two to warm me up
again. I put my clothes back on. When I exited the cubicle,
my willy was still at full salute. So I rushed up to my bedroom
without seeing my parents again.
I was thinking. I had a
glimpse in there of the Richard mymic naked. Even the
computer-generated naked details were convincing (perhaps because of
the SD effect). I resolved to put Richard into another story
where I could see him naked for a longer time.
