The School Trip
Part 1 – The Trip
It
was during early summer that school provided us with a very unique
opportunity: we would be allowed to spend two weeks visiting an
indigenous tribe near the Amazon rainforest. But only a few selected
students would have this opportunity each semester, as they didn’t want
to bring any problems to the tribes and their living.
Students
from all ages could be selected to go, and the selection would be made
based on grades and behaviour, so most kids started behaving very
properly last month.
They eventually selected ten boys and ten
girls to go to the tribe and learn in firsthand about their culture.
The boys ranged from ages 7 to 14, and the girls from 6 to 15.
So we all entered a bus and went towards the tribe. When we got halfway
there, we were told that we had to move from the bus to a boat to
traverse the river. So off we went, all twenty of the kids and the four
teachers that joined us to help us.
After an entire day of
travelling, it got dark and the teachers set us up to sleep on the
boat. They had a few tents where we could rest, and the boat had a
covered area. It wasn’t very comfortable, but it was good enough to
rest.
At sunrise we all got up. We brushed our teeth with the
river’s water and ate the breakfast that we had in our bags. After two
hours or so, we finally arrives at a pier where we would drop off and
walk a little bit.
We walked for a few minutes and found a man
waiting for us. He was only wearing a sort of skirt made of leaves and
he had some beautiful bodypaint on, with the one on his head looking
like stripes and the one on his chest looking like a bird.
He
asked if we were the school people, and we said yes. So he asked us to
follow him, and took us for a fifteen minute walk. Soon we reached a
beautiful tribe, filled with shacks made of wood and vegetable fibers.
A few women were sitting in a circle cooking a big pot of food. They
turned towards us and came to say hello.
We all said our
greetings, but some boys could barely look them in the face. The women
were also wearing only a skirt made of leaves and no bodypaint. The
teachers apologized for the boys’ behaviour, but the women said it was
okay, as we were from a different culture and weren’t used to it.
They then told us to follow them as they would show us their kids. They
took us towards a group of little children who were playing some sort
of game. The oldest one couldn’t be any older than seven, and to our
surprise they weren’t wearing even the leaf skirt. They were baring it
all, and us kids were all shocked.
Then the man came to us and
told us that the other men had gone out to gather food, and that the
other women were in their shacks working on other things. So he asked
us to go with him to see his wife, who would be welcoming us properly
and teaching us about their culture.
We entered the biggest
shack and found another topless woman. She was wearing a beautiful leaf
skirt and had a pristine red bodypaint shaped like a fish. She asked us
to sit down in a circle in front of her, and she started telling about
the tribe.
She said that they were descendants of the original
people in America, and that they fought very hard to not become slaves
under European rule. So they force themselves to preserve tradition by
never wearing Western clothing, and only using technology for important
things, like getting news or communicating with health professionals.
They even had their own local school teaching their local culture to
the kids in order to preserve it.
She then said that we were
probably needing to bathe after such a long trip, and that after that
her sister would help us get dressed in their traditional clothes. So
she told the boys to join her husband and the girls to join her.
Part 2A – The Girls
The
teachers and the ten girls joined the woman leaving the house towards
the left. Right before leaving, the woman asked them if they were going
to bathe in clothes. Confused, the teachers asked what she meant. So
she answered that they should drop their clothes there near their bags,
as there is nowhere to keep them near the river. Right as she finished
saying that, she started to untie the side of her skirt, dropping it
near the door.
They all looked confused, so the woman asked if
they needed any help. So she went towards the youngest girl and started
to help her undress. That’s when the older girls understood what was
happening, and asked her if it was okay to do that, as the boys were
just leaving the house. She said that there was no problem there, and
that they should just undress or else it would get too late to have a
good bath.
So she helped the younger girls undress while the
teachers and the older girls followed suit. When they were only on
their underwear, they said they were ready, but the now naked woman was
confused and asked about those pieces too. She said that no one should
bathe in clothes, as it is unhealthy for the body, and told them to
hurry.
Unwilling to force their own prejudice atop the
indigenous woman, they then removed their last pieces of fabric and
covered their lady bits with their hands. The older woman then asked
them to follow her towards the river now.
They then crossed
the tribe through where the women were cooking, and they commented on
how pretty one of the teachers was. This only made her feel even more
selfconscious about her exposed skin.
When they reached the
river, the lady showed them where the safe places to wash were. She
helped some of the kids enter the water, as it was a bit cold, and the
teachers helped the others. The woman then showed them a plant that
they should rub on their bodies, as it had cleaning properties.
They stayed in the water for over ten minutes washing with the plant
when the woman told them that they should enjoy their time more. They
were all curved in shame, and she wanted them to feel happy. So she
suggested that they start singing, and started herself. Then some of
the kids followed, and soon everyone was singing and forgetting about
their nudity.
Twenty more minutes passed before it was time to
go back. The woman told them that her sister was probably ready to help
them, so they should return. They then started marching back, and they
didn’t even care about their bodies showing.
When they reached
the sister’s hut, she was standing by the door with a beautiful
bodypaint in multiple colours. She told them to enter the hut, and that
they were very beautiful women.
The sister asked the oldest
teacher to join her. She asked her to stand up near a table, and
grabbed a few paints. Then she asked the teacher when she was born, and
she told her. She said that the date meant that she was a blue fish, so
she got a blue fish painted on her belly, with blue wavy lines painted
on her cleavage.
Then the next teacher was called up. She was
a bit younger, and was a green leaf. So she got a green leaf painted on
her chest and a few stripes painted on her face.
This followed
suit until they reached the oldest student. The woman said that she
couldn’t get painted yet because her body wasn’t pure yet. She was the
only girl to have hair on her cooch, and it was considered improper in
that tribe. So the sister asked her to go to the next room with the
former woman to remove it. She went, and some screaming was heard as
the woman used beeswax to cleanse the girl. After that, she came back
red and crying, and got a beautiful blue cloud painted on her chest.
This followed until they reached an eleven year old girl. She was the
last to get painted, and got a lovely red tree on her belly. The
younger girls, nine and under, were considered kids, and couldn’t get
painted.
Then the girls with bodypaint were asked to tie a
string made of straw around their waists. The younger ones were asked
to wait. And then the sister asked each teacher and each older girl
whether they preferred straw or leaves. They all chose their
preferences and the chosen mateiral was tied to their string, making
them have beautiful skirts themselves.
Then they were told to
go back outside as there would be a banquet to welcome them. One of the
teenagers asked about their chests, but the sister said that breasts
are pure as a motherly shape, and that they should be open. The nine
year old also asked about her clothes, but the older woman said that
kids can’t wear clothes, as their bodies are completely pure; when she
complained, one of the teachers told her that she should follow the
culture; when she asked about boys seeing them, she was told that that
was not too big a deal, as she was still a kid, and that they were all
accepting the differences when they let their breasts be exposed.
Part 2B – The Boys
The
story follows exactly as with the girls. The boys also felt like they
had to hide, but the man helped them feel more at ease. They went to
bathe at a different part of the river, and even played a little. The
waxing was also done to two boys, and their screams were heard from a
distance.
The difference started when they went to get the
bodypaint. The man’s older sister was the one doing it to them, and the
older boys felt uncomfortable with showing their bodies to a woman, but
she was much older than them and made them feel better by comparing
them to her younger brother and calling them manly.
They then
were given the string to tie around their waists, but only those that
had reached puberty. There was one ten year old who got it, but one
eleven year old who didn’t. When he complained, the woman told him
that, since his body was still a kid’s, he had to be treated as a kid,
and had to stay naked.
After that, they were sent to the banquet as well.
Part 3 – The Banquet
They
all arrived at the banquet at around the same time, the women about a
minute before the men. When the men arrived, the nine year old girl
instinctively put her hand in front of her cooch, and the older girls
covered their chests instinctively. Only two teachers didn’t cover
their chests. The eleven year old boy also quickly covered his wiener,
but he wasn’t fast enough, as one of the teenage girls made a comment
on how cute his thing looked. At around this time, the kids also joined
them, and the other men had just arrived brom bathing themselves.
They sat down in a circle near where the cooking pot was set before.
The older local women were setting up fish on a banana tree leaf and
some cassava as well. Each one was given a decent portion to eat, and
they were told to eat with their hands.
Some of the girls
asked to eat later, as they were unwilling to uncover their breasts,
but were told to stop being silly, that their bodies were beautiful.
They said that the boys would look, and were told that curiosity was
normal for new things, but that in no time they wouldn’t even care
anymore. So they started to eat. During lunch, they all talked a lot
about the indigenous cultures and how each tribe is different.
After eating, they were separated into kids and teens, with the kids
being taken to play with the indigenous kids, and the older ones taken
to learn about cooking and fishing.
Part 4 – The Kids
The
younger kids all started playing with the locals immediately, but the
eleven year old boy and the nine year old girl wandered off together
for a while. They didn’t feel like little kids anymore, and didn’t want
to stay playing silly games.
The local boys and girls were
teaching the visitors about a game that they liked to play. They had a
ball made of fiber; one kid would throw it as far as possible, and the
others had to run to see who would catch it first. This would then
repeat until every kid had thrown the ball once, and the winner would
be whoever caught it the most times. They all seemed to have a lot of
fun.
The two older kids had found a bench to sit on. Both were
timidly covering their fronts with their hands, but walked side by side
towards it so that none would see the other’s butt. They sat down and
started looking at the children playing and having so much fun. The
girl commented on how unfair it was that she couldn’t join the older
girls, as she was already very responsible. The boy agreed with her,
wanting to join the men. She asked him why he didn’t, and he said that
it was because his body still hadn’t developed.
That comment
made her curiopus about him, but she didn’t say anything about his
body. Instead, she pointed at one kid who was running with the ball and
said how cute he looked with his tiny penis flopping about with his
steps. He giggled, and said that it was indeed quite funny.
She then asked him if boys were normally that small, and he said that
some are and some aren’t, it depends on each boy. She asked about the
very tip, as there was an extra flap of skin moving on its own, and he
answered that most boys have some skin like that. She asked if he did,
and he got red with shame, to which she giggled and told him he didn’t
have to answer if he weren’t willing to.
He then commented on
one of the girls’ hair, saying it looked very shiny, and she said she
was jealous, as her hair wasn’t so nice. He then said that she was
pretty too, to which she blushed.
She asked him if he didn’t
feel like joining the game, as the kids looked so happy. He said that
it looked like fun, but that he was too old, and they decided not to
go. But a few minutes later they were so bored that gave up and decided
to play.
They were still running with their hands covering
their fronts, but were more lax about their behinds. And then the girl
was the first to reach a ball. She lowered to grab it, and positioned
it right in front of her parts to cover. Then the kids asked her to
throw it, and looking as red as a bellpepper she did. This was the
first time that the boy saw her front uncovered. He went close to her
and said that there was no more reason to hide. He made a deal with
her, that they would stop hiding from each other, and she agreed, as
she was already seen and wanted to see him. From then on, they felt
more free, and became good friends, spending all of their time during
this visit together.
Part 5 – The Night
It
soon became dark. The locals asked the teachers for help setting up
hammocks for everyone to sleep. All twenty-four of them needed one, so
it was a lot of work. They divided into three houses: twelve hammocks
by the woman’s sister’s house, where the teachers and the younger
students would sleep, six near the man’s sister’s house where the
teenage girls would stay, and the other six near the man’s house for
the teenage boys.
When they were going to sleep, they were
given some wet towels to wipe off the paint. They were also asked to
untie their skirts, as those are only meant for special occasions.
Since there were clear separations, no one complained about it, though
the two of teachers got a bit uncomfortable having to sleep naked near
the eleven year old boy.
Since many of them weren’t tired,
they stayed awake for some hours telling stories. The locals shared
stories about the animals and their families, while the visitors talked
about the city and their own families.
Part 6 – The Next Morning
When
they woke up, there were no skirts nearby. The teachers, being the
first to wake up, asked for them, but were told that they would get
their new clothing after bathing. So they woke the kids up and walked
towards the river. The eleven year old boy asked if he shouldn’t join
the men, but was told that he was still young enough to go with the
ladies.
In their way, they stopped by the place where the
girls were sleeping and asked them to join them. Some complained about
waking up early, but joined them nonetheless. The same followed with
the man gathering the teenage boys and the other men from the tribe.
After bathing, they got back to the huts. The younger children were
asked to go play while the adults got dressed. They explained that,
since it was a regular day, they couldn’t wear the special clothes or
paintings, but had to stay clean and let their skins breathe. So they
were only allowed to wear a string around their waists that carried
some small leaves and rocks as decoration. Each one was allowed to
choose their own fiber string. They asked about at least covering their
bottom parts, but were told that there was no reason for it, as they
were natural just as nature intended.
For the boys, the men
all joined in another house and grabbed their own strings. Those were
adorned only with hard rocks as to symbolize masculinity. The boys also
complained about showing their penises, but were told that a soft penis
is nothing to be ashamed about, as it is as natural as can be. They
were then taught how to tie the strings around their waists and how to
keep their penises safe. The tradition was to tie the string pressing
the penis upwards by placing the tip of their foreskins between their
bodies and the string. Another man did it first and helped some of the
boys.
One of the boys was completely unable to do so, as he
was circumcised when he was younger. The man pondered many things, as
there were no circumcised men in the tribe, and came to a conclusion:
they wrapped a leaf very tightly around the penis head, wrapped a
smaller string tying it to the shaft, and the other end was tied to the
waist string. It made him different, but at least it solved the issue.
The men went to fish and the women went to collect fruits. When they
came back, the men went to the women to give them their recently caught
fish. They were going to eat fish with bananas that day.
When
they all got there, the girls were all flabbergasted by what they saw.
They weren’t expecting to see their peers completely exposed, nor did
they feel like being exposed. So their hands hovered in front of their
bits while they examined each and every boy. They were most curious
about the boy with the green tip. Three girls pulled him aside and
asked him about it. He explained that his was different, and gave
details on how the tribe tied their willies up. They wanted to see
more, but the teachers called them back to help cook, and the men were
meant to go collect some vegetables for lunch.
