MN date uncertain; mixed gender locker room
While
It was not nude swimming , I did once have a mixed gender locker room
experience, and the genders were treated very differently. Around 1974
or 75 I was in a remedial Summer School class for kids with minor
learning disabilities but were otherwise high functioning. As a treat
our class was taken on a day out to a camp where we swam in an indoor
pool away from other guests. Our class had 8 girls and 5 boys, all ages
7 to 9. We were told ahead of time that bathing suits would be provided.
But
once we were in the changing area it was obviously a space for females
(no urinals & a tampon dispenser on the wall.) But that day there
was just this one room for both the girls & boys. It was close
quarters, too. Just some benches & lockers, plus a shower head
against one wall. When it came time to change, the teacher & her
two (female) aides started to help kids change and put their clothes
away. They were doing this with all the girls first. Pretty soon there
were girls just standing around fully naked waiting to get their
bathing suits from the aides. A few of the girls kept a hand between
their legs to keep everything from being seen. Others just stood around
talking with vulvas and bottoms casually bared.
Once the girls
were dressed one of aides, who would be coming into the water with us,
had us boys turn around and face the wall so she could change. She then
took the girls out to the pool area. Our teacher and the other aide had
us boys undress and went through the same procedure with us. So yes,
all the boys were seen nude by two adult women, but not by our
classmates. After getting our trunks we boys went to the pool area,
having already missed out on some of time the girls were out there. The
swimming was a lot of fun but over too soon.
When we all went
back into the changing room, the girls were gathered together to shower
first. We boys were again left to just stand around awaiting our turn,
while girls were taking off bathing suits and lining up to shower. None
of the adult females in charge told us to look away or leave the room.
A couple of girls who were at the back of the shower line started
talking with us boys, each one keeping a hand down front to cover their
vulvas. One of the aides walked by and told the girls to stop being
babies and remove their hands. After they complied the aide said; "see,
theirs look just like every other girl's, don't they?", then she just
walked away, leaving the girls embarrassed and no longer wanting to
talk to us.
When the girl's showers were over and they were all
dressed, it was us boys turn to do the same. The girls were taken out
of the room, just like they had been when going to the pool. We took
off our trunks, got in & out of the showers, and put our regular
clothes back on. While showering the one teacher’s aide stood in front
of the shower observing us (with all of us nude) and telling us to
hurry up and move things along. After the way the modest girls were
treated, I did not try to cover my penis, though I wanted to.
Why
we were allowed to see the girls nude but they were not allowed to see
us? I don’t really know. With three adult females in charge you'd think
that they would be more on the side of saving the girls from
embarrassment instead of the boys. Maybe female nudity was considered
less objectionable at that age because their were no breasts. But why
the one aide was so against the few modest girls covering their vulvas
when all the other girls left theirs exposed is hard to understand.
Maybe we were treated different because there were less boys, and we
were essentially just guests in female locker room. I really don’t
know, but there was a nudity double-standard that favored boys over
girls.

MN 2005. Some of the posts below are
from a voy.com forum that was deleted several years ago, and recovered
via archive.org wayback machine.
All of this stuff about
different standards for boys and girls locker rooms in school was very
true for me. In my high school there were two double doors to the boys'
locker room, one at either end. Rain or shine, these were always left
open and the two sets of urinals were right next to the doors. From
either door, you could look right down the main aisle alongside the
rows of lockers and changing boys, towards the other door at the
opposite end of the room. The only thing you couldn't see was the
showers. As if this weren't bad enough, the coaches office was a big
room with a wall of glass that looked direcly INTO the rows of changing
boys. And guess what? If the coaches wanted to talk to a girl (we had
co-ed PE) about class, or performance in a sport or anything, they'd
bring them into the office at the end of class as the boys were
changing. This is no joke. I'm totally serious. There would sometimes
be two or three girls standing in there talking to the coach looking
right out the window at about 100 teenaged dicks. The more modest boys
would turn their backs to the window, but quite a few didn't notice
because they'd be too busy changing to see that a girl was in there.
Like other people have said, girls would hang outside the open doors to
the boys locker room all the time, but if a boy ever got within fifty
feet of the girls door he'd get detention. Talk about a double
standard. This was well known by the girls too because I once heard two
girls talking about deliberately getting busted so that they'd get
called into the coaches office while the boys were changing.

MN 2005
My
experience was similar to yours, mike. My high school was built in the
late 1800s as a school for “troubled” boys. It was later turned into a
regular private school for boys, and in the late 1960’s, they started
accepting girls. When they did this, they built the girls locker room
and showers as an addition to the building. The coaches’ office was in
the boys’ locker room, and had a window with a full view of the room,
including the showers. There was a door put in to go to the girls’
locker room, but no window. This door was directly opposite the window
and anyone standing here had a good view of the boys’ locker room. You
couldn’t see into the girls’ locker room, though because there was a
screen set up to prevent it. It didn’t happen much during the school
year, but girls did go in the office as we were changing and showering.
It became a regular thing during the summer sports camp between my
junior and senior year, though. What was also a regular occurrence all
year was the presence of the female PE instructors and/or other female
teachers who did extra duty as coaches for some of the girls’ teams.
During the class day there may have only been one or both of the female
PE instructors in the office. If one of the female PE instructors was
out, one of the female teachers would fill in, so there were times that
a teacher would see us showering, then ten minutes later, have us in
class. After school, when we had practice, there were always a few
female teachers in and out at various times. Of course, they all had
full view of the locker room while they were in there, but since the
quickest way from the gym to the office was through the boys’ locker
room, they would usually just walk through. None of the male teachers
ever seemed to think anything of the women being in there while we were
showering and changing. I never saw any of the male teachers go into
the girls’ locker room.

UN 2005. This might
be an early post by the fantasist (?) as major portions of the post are
in the fantasist style. Has the voy.com fantasist been posting
since before 2005?
I am amazed as I used to travel around from
high school to high school in my area as a member of my high school
basketball team back in the early 1980’s (I’m age 38 now), and I used
to see the differences in how privacy is treated in the locker rooms of
the various school gyms that I visited. The vast majority of the
schools did seem to do a pretty good job of giving both boys and girls
privacy as they changed clothes and showered in the locker rooms.
However,
a few of the schools I used to see just made me drop my mouth wide open
in disbelief. At one co-ed high school where I visited, the
coaches’/gym teachers’ (both male and female) office was right at the
entrance to the boys’ locker room. And as a person walked into this
office, he/she had a straight, clear view into a small portion of the
boys’ dressing area. A few boys could be seen dressing/undressing in
this area, and as other boys walked through this area going to and from
the shower area, they could also be seen completely naked!
I
checked out the entrance to the girls’ dressing room at that school,
and found that there were no offices nor any other door near the girls’
door. And when their door was opened, all you could see was a wall!
There was NO straight view into the girls’ locker room, and so there
was NO WAY to see into their room! But why in the world would the
school put a busy office (especially one where female teachers and girl
students could visit) right smack at the entrance to the boys’ locker
room?! And why wouldn’t they at least have put up a screen or something
so that you couldn’t see right into the boys’ room?! One of my male
cousins went to that school and he told me that girls regularly found
any excuse to go see a coach or female PE teacher in that office right
when the boys are showering after PE class. And new, young female
teachers always show up at this office within the first few days of
every new schoolyear to “check it out”. My cousin said that as we boys
showered and changed, we could hear the new female teachers (in that
office with the male PE teachers) giggling and laughing at how easy it
is to “check out the nude boys”! I’m sure those female teachers were
very glad they chose the teaching profession!! And my cousin says he
NEVER, EVER saw any male teachers go even close to the girls’ locker
room! They wouldn’t dare!! It must have been only a female privilege to
get to check out the opposite sex nude! HOW CAN THOSE SCHOOL OFFICIALS
POSSIBLY JUST LET GIRLS STAND THERE AND CHECK OUT NUDE BOYS LIKE IT’S
NOTHING??! Don’t they know many girls get a BIG turn on out of THAT??!
...and then these girls go embarrass the boys further by blabbing what
they saw all around school??!
Frequently, when designers convert
an all-boys school to a co-ed school, they leave the boys’ restrooms
and locker rooms with minimal privacy, thus making the naked boys very
vulnerable to the girls in school, but at the same time, they build
brand new VERY PRIVATE restrooms and locker rooms to make sure the
ladies’ naked bodies are fully protected from their male classmates!
Another
male cousin of mine went to an all-boys high school. He said that if
you stand at the extreme end the main lobby immediately outside their
school’s gym, you can see directly down a flight of stairs into a small
hallway that connects he boys’ locker rooms (for both home and visiting
teams) with the shower room. At all girls-schools the girls’ locker
rooms are like fortresses. They want to make sure THEIR girls are
protected from “peeping boys”. But some of these all-boys schools act
as if they don’t even expect female visitors ever at the school --
which of course is ABSURD!! Anyway, most people who visit the gym at my
cousin’s all-boy school never walk by that area of the lobby (where you
can see into the boys’ locker room a little bit). But some of the girls
who visit there to watch boys’ basketball games, also end up watching
the boy players walk naked through that little hallway after the games,
as the girls loiter at the top of those stairs, because those girls
have discovered this very convenient “peeping opportunity”! My cousin
said one night after a game, some giggling girls were standing there as
usual enjoying a “naked peep show” (courtesy of the boy players), when
a male teacher at this all-boys school walked right by them. Now get
this! All the teacher did was shook his head as he smirked and said to
the girls “Have a nice evening, ladies!”, and he walked on by and out
of the gym. That’s all!! Are you kidding me??!
Both of these
examples and the ones you other guys posted here really shows how so
many schools want us boys to believe that it’s somehow “just fine” and
“no big deal at all” when a girl sees a teenage boy nude. Girls are
mature and well-behaved, so boys shouldn’t be concerned about what the
girls or female teachers see. (The schools just ignore the fact that
for many girls, this is a DREAM opportunity to see ALL of the other
sex, and many girls will gossip and tease about what they see on naked
boys!) But the girls must NEVER, EVER be put into a position where a
bunch of howling and whistling boys could see their precious naked
bodies. Of course, I’m glad girls are this well-protected, because I
love and respect my 3 sisters, and if it came down to a choice between
either one my sisters being embarrassed nude or ME being embarrassed
nude instead, I would choose ME to be nude instead of my sister,
because I would ALWAYS protect a lady’s modesty, even if it cost me my
modesty! But man Oh man, there should also be some more gender BALANCE
to this modesty thing in schools and YMCA’s!

MN 2005; a reply to above post.
You’re
right about the differences in the schools regarding their attitude
toward boys’ modesty. I went to my high school in the early to mid
1970s – right on the heels of the “women’s lib” and “free love” eras.
The school went co-ed not too long before. As I mentioned, it was built
as a reformatory of sorts for boys, so privacy was not a concern, but
keeping an eye on the unruly boys was. Hence, the need for a full view
of the locker and shower rooms. When the school went coed, they didn’t
have the money nor space to build a separate office for the female
staff, so they had to share with the men. According to an older brother
of a friend who was there for the transition, this caused some
problems. The boys did not want the women there when they were
showering and complained about it. Worse still, was that they would
regularly bring girls into the office with them. To make a long story
short, it was worked out that the female staff could stay, but couldn’t
bring girls in while the boys were changing. Nobody ever seemed to give
a good explanation as to why they couldn’t put curtains or something in
the windows. “We have to keep an eye on you hooligans” one male coach
told them. It was kind of like “Too bad, get used to it.” Which they
did.
By the time I got there, this was the status quo. In fact,
it kind of relaxed a bit, as girls did make their way into the office
while the boys were showering. There was a difference, though,
depending on the time of day. PE classes were not coed, so the only
time a girl might have made it into the office while boys were
showering was if their class followed a boys’ class. It didn’t happen
often, but it did happen. After school sports was a different story.
Since there were boys and girls sports, the girls were there at the
same time as the boys. When the various practices were over, everyone
went to the showers. Since there were many more boys in sports than
girls, it took the boys longer to shower since we had to take turns. It
was fairly common that girls would be in the office while the last of
the boys were showering. As I mentioned before, the female coaches were
always around.
I made reference to one summer sports camp being
different. This was the summer between my junior and senior years. The
camp was only open to students who played sports, although it wasn’t
mandatory. I had been to it the other two summers and it was pretty
much like during the school year in terms of girls being around during
showers. The camp was run by the four PE instructors – two men and two
women. This one summer, though, we had four women. One of the male
coaches left the school at the end of the year, and the other one broke
his leg while on vacation. The only replacements they could get to
commit to the whole summer at such late notice were two of the female
teachers who also coached. The summer started out like the others, but
as time wore on, the “no girls rule” fell by the wayside. Either nobody
really noticed the change until it was too late to complain, or none of
us wanted to seem like a “baby” for complaining about it. Eventually,
girls were always in the office while boys were showering.
There
wasn’t too much in the way of outright teasing at any time of the year.
Whether it was maturity, “team spirit,” or threats from the coaches,
the girl athletes didn’t tease us boys. It was no secret that they
enjoyed the lopsided arrangement; we basically lived with because we
hadn’t much choice. We were all expected to act like “adults” and
pretty much, we did. There was some teasing by younger girls who got
the odd chance to see the boys during PE class, but since that didn’t
happen very often, it never got to be a problem.
I don't know of
any other school, public or private, where things were quite like this.
I did hear of women coaches going in the boys lockerroom when they were
being rowdy, but not as a regular occurrance. Certainly, no girls were
allowed, although some did get peeks.

FN 2005
In
Junior High School in 1967, boys had mandatory nude swimming in gym
class. Girls swam separately with other girls and wore a thin nylon one
piece bathing suit that did not have a built-in bra. Girls constantly
complained to our female swim instructor of the lack of any personal
modesty. We felt embarrassed wearing a skin-hugging suit. After a few
swim classes, she got tired of our wining and opened the door from the
pool to the boy’s locker room half way through our swim class. We were
surprised that the boy’s lockers were in a large open room. She then
had us go into the boys shower room and stand in front of a wall of
nozzles. We were shocked that there were no curtains or dividers in the
shower room. She flipped a lever and all the showers came on with a
loud whoosh. With a big smile on her face, she told us that if we were
boys that we would be naked and the gym teacher would control the water
temperature. As we walked back to the pool she told us that if we were
boys that we would be required to swim without a swimsuit. We girls
looked at each other in disbelief. From that day on, we girls never
complained again of our revealing swimsuits. We were glad that we were
born girls and that we were permitted to wear a swimsuit and take a
private shower.
My girlfriends were astonished with what our gym
teacher had told us, so we girls asked my twin brother if it was true
that the boys swam completely naked. He blushed and told us that it was
indeed true. He said that the first swim class was the most shocking
experience for 7th grade boys because that is when boys found out about
the mandatory nude swim requirement. Most of the 7th grade boys had
brought their swimsuits that first class but were teased by 8-9th
graders who told them that boys had to swim completely naked. Some boys
were shy and did not want to strip, but it was compulsory for boys and
no exceptions were allowed. They were embarrassed as they walked to the
pool that first day. My twin brother said the boys lined up along both
sides of the pool for attendance. As their name was called they would
yell here and jump in the pool. He told us that when he jumped into the
pool the first time and felt the cool water around his body he soon
realized that he would be swimming nude for over an hour. He said that
he felt jealous that his twin sister could wear a swimsuit in the pool
but he had to swim naked. He said that hated swim class but after 5-6
classes he said that he became desensitized and resigned to the
compulsory nude swim requirement for the boys.
We girls would
daydream in class when they saw a cute boy carrying a towel but no
sneakers. Girls knew that no sneakers meant that he had swimming in gym
class later that same day and would be naked in a pool with 50 other
boys. We girls would get very aroused just thinking about it. My
girlfriends asked my brother how it felt to swim naked. He said that it
was difficult because he had classes following gym and saw pretty girls
with long hair and short skirts. He said that he was very aroused after
his swimming class and when girls would tease him he would blush and
get more stimulated. He said he enjoyed talking to my girlfriends and
me about his swim class experiences. He said he dreamed at night of
what it would be like to see girls swimming nude but he agreed that
girls were too modest and could never swim naked like boys. We girls
never understood why boys had an open gang shower and swam completely
naked while us girls had private showers and could wear a swimsuit.
There was no reason for it. I guess it was just another double
standard, but I was very glad that I was born the female twin.

I
went to HS in Ridgewood NY where we were allowed to wear one piece
suits while it was rumored that the boys weren't for hygiene purposes.
One day the bell rang and our swim coach unlocked the door from the
lockerroom to the indoor pool and a class of sophomore boys were still
naked inside as someone tricked their coach by jamming the door to
their lockerroom closed effectively locking them inside the pool area.
All the boys were standing by the door naked except for the coach who
was trying to unlock the door. As we entered, the boys turned and ran
to the pool and jumped in while trying to hide their genitals with
their hands and then splashing the water. It was very stimulating to
see their privates flopping around as they ran and jumped in the water.
Quite a few nice little butts were turned towards us to keep us from
seeing their fronts. Our coach tried to round up our group to return to
our locker area but alot of the girls including myself stood there
laughing and trying to visually take it all in and sort through the
male bodies to see if we could recognize any of these embarrassed boys
from any of our classes. Finally our coach seeing that many of the
girls were not listening brought our towels out and started throwing
them to the boys in the water and to those that were huddled around the
bleachers. We will never forget the red faces and the many different
sized genitalia that were accidentally exposed to us. Great fun for us
but sure must have been humiliating for most of the boys. Don't know if
this double standard takes place nowadays as this was 15 yrs ago but it
seems like yesterday.

I know this is
slightly off the subject of medical procedures, but I was wondering if
the modesty differences also apply to other areas in your schools, such
as in PE class?
As a male, I know that back when I was in
school, the boys were not given any privacy in the locker room for
changing, showering, group physicals, etc. If a female teacher or nurse
happened to come into the locker room when we were in there changing or
showering, well, that was just too bad for us. If some of the female
students just happened to hang around the entrance to the boys gym,
they could easily see into the locker room since that door was always
kept open. Everyone knew this, but there was nothing ever done about it.
It
was just expected that we simply wouldn't care if we were seen either
nude or semi-nude by the other boys (or girls) or teachers. In my
experience this applied to the boys but not the girls.
Your
comments concerning the military style of addressing the boys also
reminded me of how things were done. That included what we were allowed
to wear or not wear. We were required to change completely into our gym
uniforms, and had to first remove all of our street clothing including
underwear. So when you were changing, there was always a time when you
were completely nude, or at best, wearing just an athletic supporter
(jock). I don't know what the rules were for the girls, but I always
assumed that they at least got to keep their normal underwear on.
So I agree that there is a double standard, but it also applies to much more than medical procedures.
I'd be interested in hearing your comments about this.
***** 2 snippets from old posts re: co-ed locker rooms:
UN, date uncertain
When
I moved to the high school, the district went to co-ed PE. With that,
they instituted co-ed locker rooms. This was the time of the ERA (the
time there was a push to get the Equal Rights Amendment passed and a
discussion of equal rights for women). So for schools, boys and girls
were to be treated equal, even in the locker rooms. We dressed for PE
and showered together in the same communal showers and after the first
awkward week, we all got over it.
------quote from another post in the same thread
My
father once told me they had mixed girls' and boys' open gym showers
when he went to high school, and that was in the 1930‘s. He said it was
no problem, everybody found out what everybody else looked like, so
what?

MN 2003; comments on the PE teachers of the 60's and 70's
I
was in junior high and high school in the 60's, graduating from high
school in the early 70's. My experience with PE teachers (for
boys) in that period led me to believe that they were subhuman:
They LOVED to humiliate the boys in any way possible, as often as possible
They would spank students (but not very often)
Incompentent and lazy - not bother to teach students anything and then test them on things they did not even teach
Nudity
- or threat of nudity - was used as punishment/threat of punishment
(mostly threat; they preferred to make us run laps for an hour instead)
No
regard for boys modesty - girl students who worked in the school office
would (on occasion) deliver messages to coaches in the boys locker room
at shower time; female teachers and parents would also visit at shower
time.
Pushed us very hard - some PE classes we ran, non-stop, the entire class; very exhausting for us.
As well:
Boys
PE uniform was not modest: extremely short shorts plus t-shirt. Girls
wore ugly unitards that looked cumbersome and uncomfortable.
The boys locker room was not designed to provide privacy.
We
had to shower naked at end of class, but did not have to swim
nude. In high school there was a rumor that the boys on the swim
team (which was co-ed) had to swim nude. That came from a very
unreliable source and I did not even try to verify it as swimming in
high school PE Class we were *required* to wear swimsuits. The
area I was in was a surfer area so modest surfer baggies were the most
common swimsuit type for boys, while some girls wore bikinis. Boys and
girls swam at separate pools in high school. We did not have swimming
in junior high or elementary.
The horrid treatment of boys by
the PE teachers was a significant factor in developing my personal
disdain for organized team sports; this disdain continues to this
day.
----- a PS by the same poster:
I believe that many
of these PE teachers were ex-military and wanted to "toughen up" us
boys in case we were drafted for the endless wars of the (Vietnam war)
era. That also may partially explain why they had no regard for our
modesty.

When
I was beginning 8th grade, we moved from the South to a small community
in the North. This was in the early 70's. The school that I came from
didn't have a pool, so there were no swim classes. I was surprised to
learn that my new school had a pool, and then even more surprised to
learn that we were not allowed to wear trunks in the pool. I remember
being really nervous about it on the first day, but everyone else was
used to it, and after that it got easier. Swim classes went on that way
through high school. We never had a female instructor. We didn't have
coed classes at first, but it was not at all unusual for girls to be in
the pool area while we were naked. When classes did become coed, for
swimming we divided into boys and girls groups, with the non-swimming
group having a class in the gym. There were big windows between the
pool and the gym where the girls classes were gong on, so it was pretty
easily viewable. I am pretty sure that every girl in my grade saw me
naked on more than one occasion. The attitude seemed to be that that's
the way it was, so it was really no big deal.

FN date uncertain
At
a private club in Maryland, young boys all swam naked. Girls, of all
ages always wore swim suits, even if just a bottom, for little girls. I
don't recall a published policy, but I think that, regardless of age,
after boys began to display obvious signs of puberty, they just
started, or were asked to wear swim suits. That went on until the
1970s, when the Board of Trustees required all to were swim suits. That
reflected a changing attitude toward any public nudity.
I was
only a youth myself, but I can agree that at the club, to me anyway, it
seemed that the time for boys to suit up, either on his own or by
suggestion, was after he had developed a defined pattern of pubic hair.
My brother, for instance, fair haired, light complexion, was almost 15
before his started to appear. This applied to open or recreational
swim. Early morning lessons, however were always nude for boys, whether
pubescent or not, until the rules were changed.
Sure we enjoyed
it. The little boys were just that, little. Up to 10 there was now much
difference between soft and hard except that it was sticking up or out.
After 11 there would be a significant change in both size and length.
But, boys did not just walk around all day with erections. Yes they
happened, but there would be days when there were none, it least that I
saw. On other days, all it would take was for one boy to come up stiff
and there would be three or four following in a row.
There were
some boys who would be embarrassed. One I can clearly remember was a
kid at the beginning of the summer, he was finishing 7th grade. We had
last seen him naked in the fall, and he had not started much
development. I saw him dropped off by his parents and waved to him as
he went into the locker room. Shortly, he came out, naked, and started
over to the pool. He had developed quite a bit over the school year,
but no sign of hair. My friends and I got up and walked over to him,
both to say hello, and get a better look. My friend gave him a big hug,
not at all intended to be sexual, but he immediately began to become
erect. It was such a unexpected reaction that we all just stood there
and watched it come up full. He was very embarrassed, became totally
flustered and turned around and returned to the locker room. It might
have been a half hour before he came out again.
Yes, we did talk among ourselves about the boys a lot.

MN
my
high school required us to wear the suit they provided. The suits were
unlined speedo-style bikini briefs. We were given a different suit
every day, so we prayed we were given the correct size. The classes
were co-ed and the boys suits didn't leave anything to the imagination.
Suffice it to say that I never got any offers to date after swim class.

While
girls might not have been “allowed” to watch boys swimming naked in
class, they certainly were not “prevented” from watching. It became
obvious that completely segregating the girls and boys P.E. programs in
our school was going to be impossible.
By the time I made it to
Junior High, I believe they had pretty well given up on separating the
boys and girls entirely, they were separated with the girls doing
volleyball in the gym and boys swimming in the pool (nude), or vice
versa. (Bear in mind that the pool and the gym were opened to one
another sharing the locker rooms and shower facilities.)
By the
time I had made it to Senior High, boys and girls were allowed in the
pool at the same time. (Boys nude and girls wearing a “school issued”
swimsuit). We even participated in relay races with boys and girls on
the same teams with one another.
Before your imagination paints
you a picture of wild and zany orgies, let me assure you that the
activities were well supervised and chaperoned. A girl could be
dismissed or expelled for a simple wardrobe malfunction, and a boy
could wind up running laps in the gym for getting an erection.
Over
the years these standards (or lack thereof) were eliminated, and if
they were not completely gone by the time “TITLE IX” legislation came
about, it certainly was!
Personally I like the old standards. I
liked the boys swimming naked, with or without the girls presence. I
find nothing wrong with my sons swimming naked with or without girls
around, as long as the girls keep their suits on. I also have no
problem with my daughter swimming alongside naked boys, as long as she
keeps her suit on.

Although we had
separate boys and girls swim and gym classes, the girls swim classes
could be right before or right after a boys class where all the boys
were nude. So the girls would march in with their teacher while the
boys were still getting out. Also for meets at the Y, the boys would
swim nude in front of a mixed audience. No one seemed to care about any
of this.

I grew up in the 60's and 70's,
our school had no pool but through elementary and high school we used
the pool at the y. When young up to about 8th grade we swam nude as did
the girls. Boys at one end and girls at the other. As we approached 8th
grade we did swimming medley withe the girls. Once we were in H.S. we
had swim classiest before the girls still at the Y. The boys swam nude
and the girls wore one piece. They always came in Earle and sat in the
benches in pool area. Nobody made a big deal out of it. When we had
meets at night all boys for each age group were nude. The girls all
wore suits. The parents and relatives sat in bleachers for the meets. I
never understood as when the meets were over we all showered and
changed in the same dressing room as it was a YMCA. I also recall
mothers were always in the dressing room. It was a different time.

I
graduated from High School in 1959 and swam naked in swimming in
school. It was just so expected that I had no problems with it, neither
hated nor enjoyed it. I was also the photo editor of the yearbook and
had to take photos of the swim team for the yearbook. One of the guys
never got the memo to be sure to have a swimsuit with him. I retouched
the print when it was sent to the printer, but the printer must have
thought it was dirt, and erase some of the ink. Luckily, the person
doing so must have realized this was not going to be a good idea, so
stopped, only part of the suit remained, enough to leave modesty.

I
remember it well. It seemed a bit odd at first, but we became
accustomed to it. After a while, it was the normal routine. In school
and public places like the Y, swimming sessions were split between male
and female. That meant that boys and girls were not allowed to swim
together at the same time. It did not necessarily mean that there were
never girls in the pool area while the boys were swimming or boys in
the pool area while the girls were swimming. The girls could easily
access the pool from the gym and actually sit and watch us. We could do
the same, but those bulky suits the girls had to wear didn’t provide
for an entertaining sight.
Boys had to come out of the locker
rooms completely naked. The could carry a towel with them, but it had
to be put on the benches and not carried to the pool. Girls on the
other hand had to wear a bulky one piece swimsuit and remain clothed at
all times. A girl could be dismissed for a “wardrobe malfunction”.
I
remember, as a boy at the time, thinking that the girls were the ones
that were inconvenienced. We had fun, naked fun. Innocent fun, for the
most part, because everyone was naked. It was like being a youngster at
home all over again. The poor girls weren’t allowed to have this kind
of fun because of the strict NO NUDITY rules imposed on them. As time
went by, people started imposing moral values upon us that put an end
to it, and then the “Title IX” legislation practically forced things
co-ed.
I don’t know when boys naked / girls suited policies got started, but they were still in place through the late 1960s.

in
the late 50s and early 60s at the YMCA, Men and boys swim in
competitions were always swimming naked. Girls and women would watch
from the bleachers. This was common place. Nobody thought it wrong, it
simply took place.
i asked my female cousin if she remembered it and she did, saying it was considered completely normal.
she
also reminded me in the very erly she and I and others took swimming
lessions at our country club and they were always in the nude…again…
not a big deal This all took place at the YMCA in Queens, NY and in
Nassau, Country on Long Island

From my
memories of those days, our primary concern wasn’t whether or not we
were seen nude by the girls. Being naked while in the pool was old hat:
it was normal just like wearing the little, immodest hip covering
shorts was if we were on the basketball team.
Collectively among
both the girls and the boys, we all didn’t think so much as it being
unfair to the boys to have to be naked and the girls possibly getting
to see us. We all thought it was unfair to the girls that we got to be
naked and they didn’t. I knew a lot of girls who wanted, very much, to
get in the pool without the ‘school issued’ woolen one piece suit.
Our
school eventually eased off the separation of the girls and the boys
pool time, but still maintained the boys nudity and the girls mandatory
wearing of their suits. They were strict about it, a girl could be
suspended and possibly expelled even for an innocent wardrobe
malfunction. I remember one girl whose suit broke and everybody got to
see her thirteen year old breasts…..she was suspended from all pool
activity for the rest of the school year.

In
indian schools in 2005–2008, all boys were required to be nude on [swim
meet] field trips. It was to differentiate between schools,so one year
one school would have It's boys naked, and the others could wear
speedos, and vice versa the next year. The schools could afford only
one type of swimsuit,so the rule made sense. I remember the first time
this happened, around 6th grade. We were a little awkward, cause girls
were there too,and they were clothed, And we could hear them giggling.
Half of us had boners. Our pe teacher just told us to go with the
flow, and we got used to it. We would also get naked at certain
religious sites.

In the mid 70's I
was on the swim team of a Big 10 school. We were allowed to use the
same weight room as the guys. Apparently the Federal law required it.
This necessitated that we walk down a hallway from the pool and turn
left into the weight room. The right was the shower room. When we
walked out of the weight room we could see 3 shower heads which
sometimes had guys under them taking showers. At first I was very
embarrassed by this. Many of the girls put towels over their heads. As
time went by, some of us really enjoyed it.
I am curious if anyone out there remembers this. If so, give more information so I can tell if you really were there.

I
was forced to swim naked during my pre-university days but was never on
any swim team. The swim team was required to swim practices naked but
consisted only of males. Actual meets were held covered.
According
to a previous girlfriend who was on the mixed gender swim team at her
university, the girls swam practice in suits but requested nudity from
the boys, all but one of whom complied. I cannot confirm her story but
have never known her to tell tales. She did say this was during early
morning warm-up practice, sans coach.
She added that all of the
males had typical swimmer's bodies, meaning they had nothing of which
to be ashamed. I asked her how exactly one managed to induce the males
team members to strip, save one. She replied that they asked.

This
was also common practice in some schools in Germany up to at least the
70s, where boys practiced in the nude together with girls in swimsuits.
But I think this was only up to a certain age, about 13 or 14. They
even competed together so in front of mixed spectators, including the
rest of the school mixed students, during swim meets. I read this in an
article in a magazine back then, which included some pictures. I think
that they were so used to it that they didn't mind.

I
swam nude at an Indianapolis public high school. My 1-8 education was
at a small lutheran school that had no locker room or gym, let alone a
pool. With no prior experience, I adapted to nude swimming within about
10 seconds. After that, it became as normal to swim nude in the school
pool as swimming with a suit was at a public outdoor pool. Nudity was
simply "what was" and it was not questioned. I will say that my school
went to great pains to make sure that neither adult females nor girls
could spy on our butts. The layout of the locker rooms did not
facilitate spying, and an old janitor made sure that no female student
or teacher "wandered in" on us. Funny thing is, most of the boys wanted
swim class to be co-ed, and we would have tolerated nudity, speedoes,
board shorts, or victorian swimming costumes if it meant swimming with
girls! Did not happen. The head of the AD was very concerned that our
privacy be protected while we were naked, and he went to great pains to
be sure that no chance for spying or "accidental" run-ins could happen.
Come to think of it, I now respect him for that. The AD head wanted us
to be confortable in our skins, and he realized that nudity would be
hard for some kids. Rules were in efect to make sure that the practice
was tolerable by all.

This
incident is weird: In 1948 when I was eleven and my sister almost
fourteen, our grandfather took us on a tour of his college campus. At
the swimming pool, from behind a tiny ceiling-high balcony, reached by
a secret passageway, we looked down unnoticed at some twenty guys
practicing, all of them nude. I was embarrassed for the guys and
annoyed (read, "envious") at my sister that she was getting to see
(college age) guys nude. Given our secret presence, I couldn't yell to
the guys to take cover, so ironically I had to let my sister enjoy the
view. Grandfather knew perfectly well they would be there nude. For
years I have wondered why he did it; my guess is that it had to be for
my sister's "benefit," not mine, but bringing me along let him get away
with it. The things nude guys have to put up with!

My
"free" swimming experience was in the Indianapolis public school system
of the 1970s. It was very private at my HS- no female teacher or
student was ever anywhere around the pool when I was there for gym.
IIRC the boys swam on M/W/F and the girls on T-Th, and no girl could
have been given the vantagepoint to oggle naked guys. Many girls did go
to swim meets, however, and after the 72 Olympics everyone wore
american-flag suits or solid black speedoes that covered about three
square inches of flesh. I also remember that one mennonite kid on one
jehovah witness kid wore suits, and it was no problem for them. It was
not at all sexual, although I would not have noticed if anyone were
looking at my butt. Overall, the experience was positive. High school
can be a very status-conscious and socially trying time. Swim class was
one place where you could relax, play in the water, and just be
yourself. Kids were not on Prozac in those days and only a few super
hotheads were on Ritalin. The pool was a place to "cool off" both
physically and mentally. Far from being stressful, the casual nudity
made it a more relaxing time.

I seem to be one of three guys on this thread from Minnesota. Maybe we should all get together and talk about old times!
I
grew up in a small town up north, and swimming nude was not only the
norm for all ages and all grades, it was considered healthful and
hygenic, and good for us. I never experienced swimming any other way
than naked.
Our 10th & 11th grade gym teacher was a former
marine and bodybuilder who thought the human body was God's finest
creation, and he taught our swim class in the nude. He was completely
out there when it came to his body, and made no attempt at modesty. If
another teacher came to the pool during class, he would stand there
fully nude and talk. Two or three times when he was called to the
office, he just put on a towel.
We had a few student teachers
over the years, and they taught swim class in the nude as well. There
were also times when we had substitute teachers. Those guys did not
teach in the nude, but there were a few occasions when we had women
substitutes. Of course, they wore clothes, but we did not. That was a
little strange at first, but we got used to it pretty quickly.
When
we were in the gym, we did not wear shirts. This wasn't a punishment.
With boys playing sports, it just made more sense. More comfortable,
less laundry. It wasn't uncommon for the football players or hockey
players or the swim team members to lose even the shorts sometimes
during an especially sweaty activitiy. Naked in the gym was as
acceptable as naked in the pool.
I was on the swim team almost
my entire life. Our practices were nude, and our swim coach (who was
not the gym teacher) was also nude. Suits weren't an option. At meets,
our warm-up laps were done in the nude, even with spectators. If we
chose to, we could put on our suits just before the competition got
under way, but this was NOT required. Sounds strange today, I know, but
suits were optional at swim meets, and most of us went without. We
didn't think of this as gay, or exhibitionist or sexual. We just
preferred swimming this way. We had been swimming nude our entire
lives, and we often had spectators when we practiced naked, so it was
not a big deal to do the same at competitions. It was no secret that
swimming was always nude at school, so neither was it a surprise that
the swim team competed that way. Again, this was a sport, not a peep
show. I know it would be viewed differently today, but it was how
things were back then.
There's plenty more I could say, but I'll give someone else a chance.

Thanks
for your comments on the "old days" in Minnesota. I was on the
basketball team and we had to make 20 baskets in a row when shooting
free throws. If we missed one we had to remove an article of clothing.
Some of the guys never made it and ended up naked. The girls who came
to watch practice loved that. Some of the girls on the swim team were
"rebels" and went nude during practice like the guys but never at
meets. Some of the girls would come during boys practice and swim laps
in the nude with them. It was unusual in Minnesota to have an outdoor
pool. I had a friend who had one and everyone loved skinny dipping
there in the summer. There was no sex at all but the girls would tease
us about the "shrinkage" the guys had. Later at HS reunions we would
all laugh at how much fun we had in the nude when we were young.

I
happened on this site after a conversation with a group of guys who
grew up in the 50's and 60's and wanted to know the reason for required
nude swimming. It was totally acceptable then without question but no
reason was given for requiring nude swimming for guys.
Like
others who posted comments, I found swim class at the Y, P.E. swim
class in high school and swim team of which I was a member always in
the nude. Our Y instructor was nude for class as was our swim coach
during practice. There were no questions about this custom. Unlike some
others we only competed twice in the nude and only once before a small
but mixed male-female crowd. Even then there was no sense of
embarrasment or inappropriateness.
Personally, this was never an
issue for me. Common showers and nude swim were normal. I am amazed at
young guys today who are so uncomfortable that they cannot change
clothes in a locker room or shower. I do not think that attitude is
healthy or normal, but maybe that is how I grew up.
Whatever the
reason for the practice, it did engender a comfortableness with our
bodies and a de-sexualized sense of our bodies. Perhaps today the
connection between sexuality and nudity is inappropriately connected.
Yet
I never understood the reason for rquiring nude swimming.. At times we
heard about suits clogging the pool filters but girls' swim suits were
required. I think the practice just was part of the idea that guys
being nude was neither sexual nor offensive.

I
attended YMCA summer camp on Catalina Island near Los Angeles in the
early 1950's. It was a camp just for boys aged 11 and 12. We wore swim
suits all week, but the last day was "optional nude swim day."
Participation was voluntary, but almost all of the boys swam naked. The
camp director lived on the island all summer with his wife and three
daughters. Their house was right near the shoreline. When we came out
of the ocean and went to pick up our towels, we could see the
director's three daughters watching us from their front window. Nobody
complained. I think we were all delighted that the girls were
interested enough in us to watch! But that was in the 1950's, and guys
today might be more modest.

Belive
it or not there were some females in Hamilton Ontario who wanted to
allow nude swimming for females at the YWCA pool after they heard that
the males swam nude at the YMCA, but the YWCA pool had an open viewing
area where the general public could see the pool at all times, so
obviously this was impossible. I know for a fact though that the
downtown YWCA did allow nude swimming at their pool in Vancouver B.C.
Canada for a while in the early 1980's, but this practice stopped when
that YWCA became co-ed as well.

I am
the guy who was forced to swim naked in HS. Didn't understand why since
the girls were required to wear suits. They told us we could not wear
them because of the filters getting clogged. So, that was obviously not
the real explanation. Nobody knows the real explanation and I no longer
really care. I DO care that we were required to strip naked even if
class was canceled, and from time to time naked boys were put in front
of the class so that 'muscle groups' could be named and examined. To me
this was bizarre.(Some of the teachers are now in jail.)
This is
obviously different from the Y, where one had a choice to join. You are
not 'forced' if you can walk away from the situation. Others have
written about fraternity initiations where the boys had to be naked in
front of girls. Yes, that happens but the boys have a choice to walk
away. By contrast, HS was a forced situation.

Became
a trainee journo in 2001 with a local paper called the XXXXXXXXX. Spent
time doing the usual stories and bored to death much of the time
interviewning local councillors etc.
About 8 months into the job
a sports reporter fell badly ill and was off work for about 10 months.
The editor of the paper asked me to take his duties, which involved
hanging around local football and rugby games each weekend and mid
weeks. I cared little for the sport to be honest, but to do the job
like my colleague had done I needed plenty of access, and backstairs
too.
October 2001 and I got sent to cover a local football team
called Trojans, and after the game was hanging about a bit unsure, when
the teams manager asked me in the changing room to chat.
Walked
in and almost the entire team was stripped off, sending me into a minor
flutter. A bit of fake laughter ensued but none seemed bothered and I
ended up sitting down on a players bench, taking down notes while the
team captain, and another player sat next to me, not even bothering
with a towel. Inside I was more embarrassed than they were.
Regularly
reported on this team over the months, always allowed into the changing
room, no one cared that I was a female reporter, saw the entire team
naked, no one hid their tackle from me, and as I could check out the
talent on offer, I asked one of the players out one day, while he was
getting dressed after a game. I'd seen what he had to offer, thought
I'll have some of that thankyou very much, and now Paul and me have
been married for 5 years.
I'd entered a few other men's rooms in
the months I did the job, all with the same attitude, and would often
be interviewing a player standing naked in front of me without a towel
covering his modesty. Some lad were clearly bold as brass.
Infact it was probably the highlight of my short spell as a stand in sports reporter.
What female would have refused the chance i got given there I often wonder.:-)

Stripped
soaked and shivering within school grounds was bad but cross country
through local towns and villages was positively mortifying.
We
where not permitted trunks in the pool and had to swim naked. The
reason given was the fairy story of blocking the filters, however other
teams and masters wore suits in the same pool?
The practice of
tying or wrapping a towel around ones waist was strictly prohibited.
The pool filters story was a widely used myth but our games master had
a very vivid story to tell of a boy who tripped and gashed his head
open because of the deadly 'towel around his waist'.
Thankfully
I was not on the school swim team as they suffered the ultimate
humiliation of having to compete naked. I recall attending a swimming
gala at the school (c1958/59) to watch my older brother compete. My
mother and aunt where in attendance, as where many other mums and even
teenage sisters.
The boys from the opposing teams wore suits but
the lads from our team did not. They had to parade themselves in front
of a mixed audience with their manhoods on display. The attitude of the
school was 'they're just boys' no harm done. These 'boys' where 14-18
years old at various stages of sexual development and at a time when
regular erections happen for no reason what so ever.
The boys
must have been so anxious to get into the water to cover up, I'm
surprised they ever won. They were kept standing around the side of the
pool due to the large number of competitors and had to do their warm up
stretches in front of everyone. One didn't dare cover ones genitalia as
this would have led to snide remarks and punishment for 'something'.
The games master used a few methods of punishment but rarely caned. The
neck strap from his whistle was like a hot poker across the thigh.
During gym training when the climbing ropes where out it was ill
advised to upset him or fail a task. He would call you over and make
you stand near the hanging rope and lash your legs with the end of the
heavy rope. One lash of that rope would leave bruising for some time
and the rough texture would really decimate a lads skin. This wasn't a
regular occurrence as he normally punished us through extra training
like laps of the field, press ups etc. He was great believer in
punishing the whole class for one boys mistakes, which led to reprisals
in the dormitory.
A minor infraction would be dealt with by a
vicious pinch to the sensitive flank or twist of the nipple, if you
were lucky. These where extremely painful and if he pinched your flank
you'd have a nasty bruise. I do recall him using a boys own plimsole to
beat the lad. I remember because it was a wicked beating and I was
somewhat involved. The lad was 15/16 at the time. A few days before the
end of term he was caught lashing me with a towel. Naked and wet from
the shower the Games Master had him lay flat upon the bench and used
the plimsole to beat the boy. The beating seemed to last an age and he
was severely marked when the teacher finally ran out of steam. He had
completely lost his temper and had even beaten the boy on his back and
calf'. cont

I have not
spoken about with my brother or former school friends. It is not talked
about. We mostly came from Military families and one didn't question
much, not like today. Most had strict unapprochable parents I guess.
That was the case in my family. However it was discussed at the time
amongst boys and I remember the absolutely hated it. Every member of
the swim team would have left if they could. There are also boys and
spectators from several other schools in the Buckinghamshire area who
would have been at these swim meets. The Waverham team would have suits
for away swims, but not home meets. So this happened maybe twice a year
and went on for years! We had a number of internetional students so
there are people all over the world effected.
