More plot development Part 10

Day after the Chubby's beating he was allowed to begin his radio project. He was very determined, the price he had paid for this idea was very high already. He explained to Morgan what he wanted to do like he had to Jetlia the night before. First they needed a solid floor to attach the bike and everything else to. They spent all morning building an addition to the newest hut. It was not much, just 8x5 feet but did have roof over it protecting the valuable electronics. They took off the wheels and removed the tires and tubing, then cleaned them up. Next to the bike they nailed the alternator down so its pulley lined up with the bike. Wiring up the radio to the battery, and the battery to the alternate went quickly. They put the antenna up thirty feet in the trees and trailed a wire down to the car radio.

Now for the hard part which Chubby had not figured out yet. How to make a belt that connected the bike to turn the alternator? The tire tubes were too short, plus they were ripped and torn. Morgan suggested they sleep on it it had been a long but fruitful day she told Jetlia. Her and both boys were tired by the time the gathering parties began to roll in. Chubby still had trouble looking Kaitlin in the eye. Altho he had apologized profusely the night before he knew he had disappointed her greatly. He swore he would be the perfect boy from now on, always trying to think of her first. She listened, a stern look on her face but ears open. He was so contrite and sincere Kaitlin could tell at once. She had forgiven him before he finished talking but did not tell him so. The older girl said, “Your on the right path but not out of the jungle yet. I know your sorry and thank you for that. You do the best you can with the radio. Focus on that now.” He nodded.

Kaitlin had thought a lot about Chubby during the day as he was in the pit. She knew he'd be filled with remorse and apologize. Now she had to handle his emotions and channel them into positive actions. After their talk she felt quite good about how she had dealt with it. Speaking with Emzadean later reinforced that feeling. “You struck the right balance. Getting him focused on the future rather then the past was great.” Kaitlin nodded with a smile. With a little finesse boys were both easy to handle and fun she thought.

The first attempt to link the bike and generator failed quickly. They had used some rope knotted together in a loop. The knot was too big and the rope began to fray quickly, and that was someone peddling the bike at slow rate. They would need higher rotation to get any good electrical output. “What do they use in the real world?” Morgan asked.

“The belts are made of rubber with wire inside.”

“We don't have any wire but we can fashion a rubber belt.” She responded.

“Rope is stronger but not enough. I think rubber would break apart, but we can try. What's the strongest rubber mixture you have?”

Morgan was surprised, he was so professional about this. “Okay we need some wet dirt and form a mold for the belt. Get the rope it's the exact length, use that as a template.” She nodded and the boys got to work getting several buckets of wet dirt. By now the village was mostly deserted, just two other girls were present. They made a mold of wet dirt around the rope-belt. Then boiled up some rubber, that took an hour while they fished from the end of the dock. Fishing was lucrative they caught a half dozen fish, including a couple big ones of 5 pounds or more.

Then they poured the liquid rubber into the mold. Morgan was careful to pour evenly so it would be balanced. The cooling process took two hours. More fishing as they waited. Lounging around was not the amazon way. They let the belt cure for another hour before hooking it up. 11C got on the bike and began to peddle. He started slow then increased the speed. It looked good the belt was tight and not slipping. The cub scout peddled faster and Chubby could see some movement on the meter showing a trickle of electricity flowing into the battery. All three smiled maybe this was going to work. “Little faster.” Said Chubby, his fellow scout did just that.

For almost half an hour things ran smoothly, then the belt began to crack. No one noticed it at first, but the weakness grew under the stress. The split soon got big enough to see. Chubby noticed it, a splinter of rubber hanging off the belt. He groaned and pointed. “Stop, Stop.” He said loudly. They all looked at the belt and could see it was beginning to tear through. “Damn I thought we had it.” Morgan and 11C (Carlos) both shrugged their shoulders. Exasperated chubby muttered. “We can't lower the strain on the belt so we need a stronger belt. That's the only answer.” He looked at the others hoping they had a solution.

Morgan spoke first, she could see the disappointment in both boys. “Well let's eat, take a break.” the boys nodded, they were both out of ideas. Today's lunch was mangoes and fish head stew. All three wracked their brains to solve this one last problem. All afternoon the three bounced ideas off one another as they sat on the end of the dock. None seems like a solution. Then the gathering parties began to return.

It was not until the next day Tamara had a chance to talk privately with Kaitlin. They ducked behind a a hut. Tamara said, “Chubby it tough, he took a lot of punishment far more then either of us figured. Took me like a hundred strikes to get him down. Betty was not gentle with her wrestling either. We both expected him to curl up into to a ball start crying and beg us to stop. But he didn't.” Tamara stressed her last three words. “I almost felt sorry for him cept he squashed me last week in the pit. Still mad abut that.” Tamara rubber her ribs.

Kaitlin laughed said, “I have a confession, I told him to do that.”

“You?”

“Yes well not to pancake you, but make you work for the victory. I told him to fight back be tough.” Kaitlin gave her sister a sympathetic look. Tamara looked annoyed but inside was very angry and began to think of a way to get Kaitlin back, her ribs were still sore a week later. “He apologized last night and promised to be the perfect little boy. Let's see how long he can keep that up?” They both laughed. But in the back of Tamara's mind a resentment of Kaitlin began to grow.

Then it happened, Jetlia's worst nightmare. Mid morning next day while the vast majority of the village was out, a boat slowly creeped up the river. Just three brownies and one boy Peron were at home at the time. Holly in the crows nest was watching the river with binoculars when she spied the boat down river maybe half a mile away. She could not yell, sound carried far on open calm water. She picked up a rock that was here for this express purpose. She didn't see either girl so she threw it at Peron's feet who stood near the fire. The rock got his attention and he looked up to see Holly waving and pointing. He got scared but called Leeosa and pointed up to Holly.

Leeosa ran over close enough for Holly to talk. “There's a military boat coming up river, slow about six guys. A big machine gun on the bow. They are looking at the river bank.”

Leeosa nodded and dashed back. “Peron light the emergency torch. An armed boat is coming.” Able to walk mostly without the the cane now he did as told. Calmly he placed the torch in the fire and twisted it around to catch quickly. Leeosa and Autumn stood by with a pale of dirt and one filled with water. It only took a moment for the torch to spark up. It was cheeked daily to be sure it would light up in an instant. Once lit he took it behind the hut so it could not be seen. Then the dirt to smother the fire and eliminate a lot of the smoke. Then Leeosa poured half the water to dowse what was left.

Holly laid on her belly and carefully watched the boat get closer. She figured it would be a few minutes till they got adjacent to the village. She turned her head and saw the fire being put out. All the kids reacted calmly, she nodded. Autumn ran to the main hut and grabbed the second pair of binoculars. The sun was behind them so no reflection was possible. The three on the ground got behind a heavy growth of foliage where they could look down on the river. Leeosa looked first, she saw half dozen men in uniforms. One driving, four in the rear all with binoculars, two scanning each bank. No one was on the machine gun. She gave Autumn the spy glasses who looked curiously and studied her enemies. Peron wondered if they'd give him a look. After half a minute Autumn handed them to Peron and said. “Make it quick.” He nodded and peered over the bush. He counted to four slowly then gave them back to Leeosa. It scared him, that was a big machine gun. At least .30 caliber if not .50, either way it could kill them all in seconds.

In charge Leeosa told Peron and Autumn to stay down. The two nodded while holding hands, they scrunched down even more. She could barely see Holly, just her feet dangling over the edge as she laid flat. No one moved for a moment, then they could hear the low sounds of the engine. It got louder, slowly the blond girl raised her head. Then just as slowly lowered it. “It's very close.” She whispered. Then the sound began to ebb. After a minute the sound faded to nothing. She looked again and breathed a sigh of releaf. Motioned her hand for the others to stand up. They did slowly and peaked over the bushes. The boat was up river now and moving away. They had not been seen. Still they waited five minutes before emerging from the thickest foliage around. Holly waved and said she would watch them closely.

Peron said it first. “That was scary.” Both girls nodded, it was terrifying to them. Men with guns looking for them. What had been a distant threat, now was a lot closer and a lot more real.

News of the patrol boat shocked all the girls and most of the boys. A few boys had thought this might happen, but prayed against it. A chilling sense of fear infected everyone. Jetlia sensed this at once, she spoke to everyone after supper. Never in amazon history had the brownie tribe been in such peril. First she congratulated Holly and Leeosa for reacting perfectly. Then she told them they would spend less time working the river for food. She moved up the boar hunt to day after tomorrow. Which meant the boys needed to be trained tomorrow so they would be ready. She told them this then ordered all the boys to the bathing pool so she could talk with her sisters. The boys complied most were still grubby from a days work in the hot moist jungle.

Jetlia spoke, “Which boys are best suited for spear training?” She asked. “I need names. Thomas and 11A are both good, but we need eight boys to carry the two carcasses back. I need six more names.” The rest of the girls began a list. The older bigger stronger boys were best for this. They wrangled with this for five minutes before the list was set. Then Jetlia talked about the patrol boat. “Our precautions worked. We need to stay vigilant and watch the river during daylight. We've done a lot to camouflage our village. They didn't even see the dock its hidden so well, those vines we transplanted worked out great.” She needed to inspire and fill the girls with confidence. “But we can't rest on our laurels. I want Calli and Willow in the morning to take a canoe and anchor it in the river just out there.” She pointed to the river. “Use the binoculars to scan the river bank and identify any part of our village that is visible. Then we cover it up.” She paused for a moment. “Any suggestions?” Jetlia asked, input from the girls was always important. The queen looked over her tribe. She saw fear in more then a few faces.

Quora said, “Should we contact home. Let them know what's going on.”

“I've already begun a letter and we'll be sending out pigeons tomorrow. In a few days the matriarchs will know whats happening here.” Jetlia responded. That seemed to reassure some of the girls. “So in the morning we will equip each of these boys.” She motioned to the list in her hand. “Betty you Tamara and I will do the training. Leeosa you take three girls and a boy with you in the morning and head north toward the boar herd. Scout the area and set up a camp site. We will follow you day after tomorrow. The rest will continue with gathering food. Kaitlin your in charge while I'm gone.” Kaitlin nodded, this was the queen the girls needed. Decisive, in command, ready with a plan before you know you need one. “Any more questions?”

Autumn asked. “You think they will send anyone here?”

“I don't know?” Jetlia answered honestly. “They may tell us to return. I hope not. At the least they will send instructions.” The brownies looked at each other. “Okay, get a good night sleep we're going to be very busy next few days. Little good fortune and we may get over 200 pounds of fresh meat. That should be enough for these boys who eat like pigs sometimes.” All the girls laughed, for they all had made the same observation. Really food consumption was off the charters with so many to feed. Another by product of too many boys.

Next day Eight of the boys were handed spears. Nothing fancy six feet long and a sharpen tip. Jetlia explained the boys role. The girls would use bows to bring down two boars. However sometimes the boar may charge and attack. The boys would stand in front of the girls with the spear tip low. They were taught how to thrust and move. It had been nine years since anyone had been injured on a boar hunt, Jetlia wanted to make it ten.

Leeosa set out first thing with 3 brownies and Raul. She had them moving fast, it was over 15 miles to the boar herds. She pushed everyone by fast walking and occasionally jogging. All the kids were in prime physical shape so she wanted to make use of that. It was mid afternoon they began to see signs of the boars. Small areas trampled down, pig droppings some still fresh. They set up camp and rested before Leeosa took two girls and scouted ahead. An hour later they returned. “The main herd is a mile off and stragglers are spread around. Think we're in a good spot if the herd doesn't march off in the morning.” The others laughed at her sarcastic comment. Then she turned to Raul. “Raul it is much more dangerous here for the night then the village. We have to be alert at all times. We need to keep the the fire going brightly it will scare off most animals who hunt at night. Someone needs to be on watch so we will all take turns.” Leeosa looked him in the eyes. He nodded as she talked.

“I'll take a watch of course. I saw Peron get jumped by the snake. I'm not going to let anything happen to you girls.” The boy took on a very serious demeanor as he spoke. He figured he loved Leeosa now and needed to protect her. That protection of course extended to her friends. He was beginning to accept the idea of life his in jungle wilds with these girls. Where almost everyday was an adventure.

Next day the main body of kids set out early for the boar herds. Jetlia set a stiff pace to arrive as quickly as possible. She wanted to get there with enough daylight to kill two boars and get it back to the camp Leeosa had established. It rained in the late morning slowing progress a little. The humidity climbed in the afternoon. Tamara and Holly were waiting for them a mile short of the camp and guided them to the camp. Leeosa filled Jetlia in. Apparently several boar had wandered off for the main herd and were just a few hundred yards away.

After a short rest and snack session Jetlia gave the final instructions. For the boys benefit, her girls all knew what to do. “You boys know what to do. We are going to sneak and get into bow range. You quietly get in front of use and in your crouch position spear ready. Don't speak it may scare the animals.” All the boys nodded and tried to mask their fears. “Leeosa take point, girls get your bows out. Three girls stayed at the camp everyone else followed Leeosa being silent as they could. The party moved slowly creeping up on the prey.

It was almost anti-climatic. The boars were too busy eating to even notice the kids getting closer. Leeosa had the brownies down wind of the animals. The six girls with bows stood in a line and notched arrows. The boys hunched over made a line in front of the girls, crouched down and pointed their spears. Jetlia nodded and all the girls let fly. All three pigs were struck twice by the arrows, all three howled in pain. Quickly the girls let a second flight of six arrows go. Two of the pigs dropped to the ground, still alive but too wounded to move. The third charged the knot of kids. The boys got terrified but stood firm. The brownies all aimed at the charging boar and brought it down not ten feet in front of the boys. Then the girls rushed in and slit the throats of all three pigs to end the suffering. One boy puked seeing so much blood. Some others were trying to look away from the gorey scene.

The girls had brought several long spears thicker then the ones the boys had been issued. It took time to impale all three pigs. Running the spears down its mouth and out the ass for best carrying. Once ready they hustled the carcasses back to the camp. Darkness feel soon after.
