Boys in Trouble

A series of unrelated one-post stories about boys in a variety of different predicaments.

Robert

“Oh, isn’t that lovely,” Mary Fairholme exclaimed, as she sat in the lounge drinking a cup of coffee. It was just approaching a quarter to twelve on Sunday morning and she, along with her husband Charles, daughter Susan, son-in-law Paul, and grandchildren 10-year-old Robert and 12-year-old Lauren had not long returned from church. It was a glorious Spring day; the sun was shining brightly, the sky was blue with light fluffy clouds, and as they had walked back through the village from the church the trees and hedgerows were bursting with blossom, and the grass verges were decked with celandines, daffodils, snowdrops and crocuses.

As soon as they had arrived home Robert and Lauren had gone upstairs to their rooms to get changed out of their Sunday-best clothes, whilst Susan had gone through to the kitchen to put the leg of lamb into the oven for lunch and make some coffee. Mary, Charles and Paul had all gone through to the lounge where they had sat chatting until Susan brought the tray of coffee through.

It was while they were chatting that Robert had started singing in his bedroom; he was three weeks short of his 11th birthday, and had a really beautiful voice. He loved music and played the piano and violin, at both of which he was progressing extremely well through the music examination grades, but his real passion was singing, and his voice was wonderfully pure and crystal clear. He went to the Sunday morning service with his family every week, so that he could sing in the magnificent surroundings of the 13th century church, and occasionally he would also attend the evening service with his grandparents as well.

As his birthday approached Mary discovered that the church was looking for new choristers to join the choir, and were particularly keen to attract boy sopranos as two of their current members’ voices had recently broken and they wanted to find two new boys to replace them, and at the same time maintain the balance of the choir. Because of the size of the choirstalls the number of choir members was limited to a maximum of 24 at any one time, and due to an ancient decree going back several hundred years, all of the members had to be male and live in the village. This had caused a few issues in more recent times with women making allegations of sexism and discrimination, but as it was recorded on the statute books and was a village tradition there was nothing that could be done about it.

The choir currently was not at capacity and there were six vacancies. Unusually for a village choir it did not have many older members in its ranks, and was made up predominantly of younger members, and had a number of boys aged between 11 and 19 years, along with four men in the 20s and 30s. This gave it rather a unique appeal, as with so many young voices singing together, with their wonderful harmonious tones, it created a very enjoyable atmosphere. It wasn’t therefore surprising that the church had bucked the trend of fewer people attending and instead had a very loyal congregation of parishioners which ensured that Sunday morning services were very well-attended indeed. It also helped considerably that the choirmaster was a very enthusiastic 35-year old, called Jacob, who had been a member of the choir for 20 years, before succeeding the previous incumbent who had retired. In addition to the traditional hymns that were sung each week, he would also include a special choral piece which the choir would sing, the introduction of which had proven to be extremely popular.

The minimum age for boys to join St. Dunstan’s Church choir was 11-years, and so the timing couldn’t have been better for Robert. When his grandmother told him about it, his face lit up with excitement; he couldn’t wait for his birthday to arrive anyway, and now he had even more cause to look forward to it so that he could go along to the choir rehearsals and audition.

******

Robert’s birthday had fallen on a Friday, and so that evening the whole family, including his grandparents had gone out to a restaurant in the nearest town for dinner. They all had a very enjoyable evening, particularly Robert who was allowed to order whatever he wanted to eat as it was his special day, and so had garlic prawns as a starter, followed by steak and chips as his main meal, and then chocolate fudge cake and ice-cream for dessert. He was very full by the end of it, but had had a fabulous time and a brilliant birthday, with the celebrations continuing into the weekend.

On Saturday he had around a dozen of his friends over for a bar-be-que in the garden, and then on Sunday his other grandparents Jean and Jim, who lived a couple of hundred miles away surprised him by joining the rest of the family at church. They had stopped overnight at a Travelodge on the way down from Cumbria and had left early so that they could arrive in time for the morning service. They had spoken to him on the phone on Friday to wish him ‘Happy Birthday’ but he had no idea they would be visiting for lunch on Sunday, and so it was really lovely when they suddenly appeared much to his amazement. After church they all returned home, and with eight people for lunch Susan was kept busy in the kitchen, although Mary helped her, and they all sat down to a most delicious lunch of home-made tomato soup, roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and roast vegetables, with apple pie and custard to follow. Jean and Jim stayed until just after 4pm when they left to begin their drive home, although they would again be staying the night at a Travelodge before completing their journey the next day.

They had been told all about the vacancies in the church choir and Robert’s plans to audition to join, and had in fact heard his voice at the service that morning, singing along with everyone else’s as it had really stood out and been quite noticeable. Before they left Robert gave them all a treat when he sang ‘Oh for the Wings of a Dove’ the song that he was going to sing at the rehearsal on Wednesday when the auditions were also taking place. All of his family, particularly his two grandmothers were enchanted and totally captivated by his stunning clear voice, as he delivered a quite beautiful rendition of it, that succeeded in causing Mary and Jean to reach for their handkerchiefs. By the time he had finished everyone was convinced that he would set the auditions alight and they all gave him a round of applause; Robert grinned at them and gave a little bow.

******

After all the excitement of his birthday weekend, Robert now had Wednesday’s audition ahead of him which he was eagerly looking forward to. When the day arrived, he was excited beyond belief and arrived at the church with his grandmother Mary, who having found out originally that the choir were recruiting wanted to be there to accompany him, and if anything was even more thrilled and worked-up than he was, if that was possible.

It had been arranged that the auditions would take place at 6.30pm, with those who were successful then being invited to join in with the rest of the choir practice that followed at 7.15pm. As only residents who lived in the village were eligible to take part, it wasn’t expected that there would be large numbers taking part in the auditions, and this turned out to be correct, with just three other boys present in addition to Robert. The auditions would be taking place in the church itself and each of the boys would be required to sing one piece of their choice which they would perform unaccompanied without music. Two of the boys were the same age as Robert, having also recently reached 11 years of age, and the fourth boy was 15 years old. The two younger boys were accompanied by their parents, whilst the older boy was on his own; all of them sat in the front row of seats in the church as they waited.

“Hello everyone, and thank you very much for coming along this evening,” a voice announced as a man in his 30s appeared from a door in the chancel area. “My name’s Jacob, and I’m the choirmaster” he said, as he introduced himself. He then asked them their names and explained what would be happening; each boy would come up to the chancel when their name was called and would sing their chosen piece; after all four boys’ had auditioned, then he would call them up again one at a time and let them know whether or not they had been successful.

The first boy to audition was Kai; he was similar in statue to Robert and as soon as he started to sing, Robert was sure that he would be accepted. He had a very clear, very precise and quite amazing voice, and had chosen to sing ‘Walking in the Air’ the theme from ‘The Snowman’. He sang it absolutely beautifully and was a true delight to listen to, so much so that Mary found herself dabbing her eyes once again. Kai was followed by the older boy, Matthew, who sand the hymn ‘Abide with Me’ and delivered a very impressive performance, with perfect pitch and resonance and a strong and easy to listen to baritone voice.

Alfie was next to be called meaning that Robert would be the final one of the four to audition. Mary glanced at him and leaning over whispered; “they’re saving the best until last,” which provoked a smile from her slightly nervous grandson. Alfie started to sing ‘Bright Eyes’ but after a couple of moments stopped and coughed two or three times before apologising and asking if he could start again which Jacob agreed to. When he began singing again it was quite apparent that his voice didn’t sound quite right; sounding off-key, strained and rather hoarse, and after several more moments he stopped again and with tears welling up in his eyes he stammered that he was sorry but that he couldn’t continue. Jacob went over and consoled him before helping the distressed boy back to where his parents were sitting. His mother explained that he had had a really bad cold and sore throat for the past week or so, but was desperate not to miss out on the audition. Jacob was very understanding when he heard this and reassured Alfie, telling him not to be disappointed, and that when he was fully recovered, he could come back and audition again. This cheered him up enormously, and as his mother and father both thanked Jacob; the expression on his face brightened considerably and he gave the choirmaster a watery smile.

At last it was Robert’s turn, and despite having a few butterflies in his stomach he walked confidently up the steps to the chancel and announced that he was going to sing ‘Oh for the Wings of a Dove.’

“Thank you,” Jacob responded, “when you are ready please begin.”

Robert took a deep breath, glanced across to where his grandmother was sitting and smiled and then focussing his eyes on the font at the back of the church he began. He had never had the opportunity to sing solo in such a huge building as this before and he was determined to make the most of it; from the moment he uttered the first sound his performance was mesmerising; crisp, crystal clear, pure and above all beautiful. His voice exuded confidence; it was bright, warm and powerful, hitting the highest notes so perfectly that it was an utterly stunning and quite astonishing accomplishment. When he finished, there was a moment of silence before suddenly there was spontaneous applause from everywhere; Jacob was on his feet, the members of the choir who had arrived for their practise had been drawn into the church by the sound of his voice and were stood at the back giving an ovation, and even the other boys who had auditioned and their parents were standing and clapping. Mary, was completely overcome with Robert’s breath-taking performance and was standing and applauding with tears streaming down both cheeks, such were the extent of her emotions.

Robert was totally gobsmacked with the response and as he glanced around him he didn’t know what else to do but just remain where he was, as probably the biggest smile he had ever generated spread across his face, and by the time he re-took his seat next to Mary he was beaming and radiating so much warmth that his grandmother almost needed sunglasses to deflect the brightness. She immediately flung her arms around him and kissed him; “Oh, Robert, that was the most wonderful thing I have ever heard in my entire life,” she exclaimed.

Almost as soon as Robert had sat down Jacob asked Kai to come back up to the chancel again to find out whether he had been successful or not. A couple of minutes later and a very happy 11-year-old returned with a huge smile on his face to confirm to his parents that he had been accepted as a member of the choir. He was followed by Matthew who was also successful in his audition. Alfie having not been able to complete his song was already aware that he would have another chance to impress Jacob when he had got over his cold and sore throat.

That just left Robert, who was called up at that precise moment by Jacob, and made his way up the steps to the chancel to hear what the choirmaster had to say. Jacob was sat on the edge of one of the choir stalls as Robert approached, before standing in front of him.

“Well Robert,” he said smiling; “what can I say? It is not very often that I am lost for words, but on this occasion, I have to admit that I am really struggling to find the right comments to make to you that adequately describe how you sang this evening. I have to say that your performance was one of the most stunning, scintillating and utterly fabulous that it has been my privilege to listen to; you absolutely blew me away completely, and I have no doubt at all that with that special voice you have a very big future ahead of you, and of course you have earned your place as a member of this church’s choir. Congratulations!” He reached out and shook a delighted Robert’s hand, who then returned his face wreathed in smiles to his thrilled grandmother.

“Oh, Robert, I am so very, very proud of you,” Mary stated as she continued to weep tears of joy, “as I’m sure everyone will be when they find out. It’s just absolutely wonderful.”

The three boys, were invited by Jacob to join the other members of the choir for their first practice session. Most of the choir was present, although there were four members unable to attend that evening. Alfie and his parents left to make their way home, with Jacob asking them to let him know when he had got over his cold and he would arrange another audition for him. Kai’s parents and Mary were informed by Jacob that they would be more than welcome to stay and listen to the practice if they would like to, and all three of them were very pleased to accept his offer.

For the practice itself none of the choir wore any robes or cassocks, as these were solely worn during church services. Jacob introduced Robert, Kai and Matthew to Dominic, the Head Choir Boy, who was responsible for making sure that all the junior members of the choir; those aged under 20 were aware of their roles and responsibilities. He would give the signal when they needed to move around the church and where they needed to stand for specific services, and he also ensured that their appearance was smart and they were wearing their cassocks properly. He had been Head Choir Boy since he was 17-years-old and was due to step down in a few weeks’ time when he turned 20, when he would hand over his position to the next eldest boy, and he would become one of the choir’s senior members. Jacob also explained to the three new boys that they would need to attend four practice sessions before they would be allowed to sing as full members of the choir in a church service as they needed to gain an understanding of everything before they sang in public.

Of the 18 current members of the choir; there were 14 of them present for this practice, along with the three newcomers; that meant that there were still three vacancies, although one of those would probably be filled by Alfie once he had managed to complete his audition. During the practice the choir sang the hymns that would be included in the two church services the following Sunday, as well as rehearsing the choral piece that Jacob had selected for the main morning service. Robert loved every minute of it and was quite disappointed when at 8.30pm it was time to finish. He was however looking forward enormously to the next couple of weeks when he could hone his singing skills and get to know the other members of the choir better, and then finally achieve his aim of singing in the choir in church on Sunday. Before then though he would have the excitement of telling the other members of his family about his success.

Unsurprisingly his parents and sister were thrilled to hear his news, as indeed were his other grandparents; on the way home, he and Mary called in at her house and he told his grandfather Charles who shook him by the hand and congratulated him, then when he got home he rang Jean and Jim, his other grandparents in Cumbria and told them; who were both overjoyed when he informed them, and said that they couldn’t wait to see him in his robes and hear him singing as a member of the choir in church the next time they visited.

When he arrived at school the following day, he was still full of smiles and let all of his friends and teachers know that he had been accepted as a member of the church choir, receiving pats on the back, handshakes and fist bumps of congratulation from them. Mrs Donaldson, his music teacher was particularly delighted, especially when Robert revealed what Jacob had said to him the previous evening; when she heard about the massive compliment that he had received she was even more elated and told him how proud she was of him. Robert stood there and grinned; he was very happy indeed.

For the next couple of weeks Robert was on cloud nine; he was walking around everywhere with an almost permanent smile on his face and was having a really fantastic time. He was constantly singing around the house which his parents and sister didn’t mind in the slightest, as they all enjoyed listening to his beautiful voice. On Sundays at church he would carefully watch as the choir arrived and departed, attending both the morning service with his family, and the evensong with his grandmother. He observed what the choir did, when they moved around and where they stood and knelt, especially when it came to holy communion.

By his third choir practice he knew all the names of the other members of the choir, and had also become friends with Kai, who he discovered to his amazement was born on exactly the same day as him. At the end of his third practice he, Kai and Matthew were spoken to by Dominic, as they each had one more practice to attend the following week before they would be able to sing in church as members of the choir for the first time. Needless to say, both of the younger boys were very, very excited about it. Matthew wouldn’t however be around that weekend as he would be away with his parents at a family wedding in Yorkshire, and so his first appearance as a member of the choir wouldn’t be until the week after Robert and Kai’s.

In preparation for their first church service Dominic asked both boys to try on their cassocks to ensure that they fitted properly; at 11-years of age they were the youngest members of the choir by a couple of years. There were two types of cassocks; those that were put on over the head and dropped down full length to the floor, and those that were open at the back and tied together to close, a bit like the type of garment you would wear in a hospital. These were the older-style cassocks and tended to be given to the newer members of the choir initially. Both boys tried them on and found that they weren’t a particularly good fit, and were quite loose; Dominic told them not to worry as he would get his older sister to take them in slightly so that they were more comfortable and closer fitting, and they could try them on again at their final practice session the following week. Each of them was very excited that they were so close to actually performing as members of the choir in church.

The next week flew by very quickly and before he knew it, it was Wednesday evening again and Robert and Kai were at their final practice. At this session Dominic produced their altered cassocks and helped them to try them on; this time they fitted much better, although they both found them very difficult to put on as they needed to be tied at the back with six separate bows. Dominic told them not to worry and that he would be able to help them on Sunday.

“Now, there is something else that you both need to know about your first service,” Dominic informed them; “it’s sort of an initiation ceremony for new members of the choir, which means that you are formally accepted as full members of the choir by all the other boys.” This was news to both Robert and Kai as they hadn’t been aware of this previously.

“What do we need to do?” Robert asked.

“Well for their first service all new choirboys have to be naked under their cassocks, apart from wearing a pair of black shoes,” he replied. Robert and Kai both looked at one another and then stared at Dominic in complete amazement.

“What?” Kai said in surprise.

“Surely you don’t mean that, do you?” Robert exclaimed, looking quite taken aback.

“Yes, it’s perfectly true,” Dominic told them; he then called over three or four other boys from the choir, and asked them to verify that what he had said was true. The other choirboys guessed that Dominic was playing a joke on the two new boys, as the service on Sunday would be his final one as Head Choir Boy, and so went along with it, backing him up and confirming that being naked under their cassocks was a requirement for their first service. Robert and Kai were still not quite sure about it, but as the other members of the choir had confirmed what Dominic had said, it convinced them that it must be true, and as they didn’t want get into any trouble by breaking with tradition, they both agreed to do it. When their backs were turned and they were out of earshot, Dominic winked at the other boys; “this could be a lot of fun,” he remarked in a loud whisper, as a grin appeared on his face.

Robert and Kai’s last practice went very well and the two of them, Robert especially, really couldn’t wait for Sunday. Just before they left, they were informed by Dominic what time they needed to arrive on Sunday, and where they needed to go, and reminded not to forget to wear black shoes.

******

The remainder of the week passed with Robert getting more and more excited as the weekend approached, and then on Saturday he received a surprise visit from his grandparents, Jean and Jim who had travelled down from Cumbria just so that they could be there to share the moment when he made his first appearance as a member of the church choir. They had booked into the local bed and breakfast guest house in the village and would be staying all weekend. Robert was even more thrilled when he discovered this as it meant his whole family would now be present to listen to him perform as part of the choir, which would make it a really very special occasion.

Robert had a very enjoyable day spent with both sets of grandparents, his parents and sister; they all had an evening meal together and then at half past eight he said goodnight to them all and made his way upstairs to his bedroom to get a good night’s sleep in preparation for his big day. He climbed into bed, switched off his bedside lamp, and lay under the duvet thinking about the following morning, his mind focussed on having to be naked under his cassock, which he was still slightly mystified about, but he certainly wasn’t going to let it worry him. His thoughts gradually became fuzzy as he slowly drifted off to sleep.

The next morning. he was up by a quarter to eight, showered and dressed and downstairs in the kitchen having his bowl of cereal. His mother appeared and made some tea, which he drank before heading back up to the bathroom, cleaning his teeth and getting his black shoes ready. The church service began at 10am, and Dominic had asked him and Kai to be there 45 minutes beforehand, so that they could change into their cassocks, and allow themselves to be relaxed and prepared in readiness for the moment they would enter the church as members of the choir for the first time and walk through the nave to the chancel, before taking their places in the choirstalls. At just before 9 o’clock he called out ‘goodbye’ to his mother, and Susan in turn wished him ‘good luck’ and she would see him after the service. He then made his way out of the front door for the short stroll over to the church. On the way there he happened to bump into Kai, and so the two of them walked along together chatting as they did so; each of them full of excitement about what they were about to do.

When they arrived at the church it was just after ten past nine; they entered via the main door at the back and then went straight across and through the door opposite which led to the rooms that the choir and clergy used, and also provided another access to the church hall which was located on the other side from the main entrance. Dominic was already there, and wearing his cassock, as were several of the other boys, who Robert recognised as being the ones who had confirmed their requirement to go naked for the first service.

Dominic welcomed them to their first service as fully fledged members of the choir and pointing to a couple of chairs indicated that they should change and put their clothes on the chairs, whilst he got their cassocks for them which were hanging on a rail in the long cupboard which rang along the length of one wall of the room. As he went across the to fetch them, he winked and smiled at the other boys who all grinned back at him. Robert and Kai meanwhile started stripping off; removing the light coats they had worn to walk to the church, followed by their jumpers and shirts. They needed to take their shoes off to remove their trousers, and as Dominic returned with their cassocks, they were just unzipping them, and after dropping them to the floor it left each of them in just their socks and briefs.

“Do we really need to take everything off?” Kai asked him.

“Yes,” Dominic replied, “except for your socks.

“Uh, okay then,” Kai stated, as he and Robert both pulled their briefs down and stepped out of them, leaving them naked apart from their socks. A couple more boys from the choir had now arrived and so there were half a dozen boys gazing at the two 11-year-olds, who were feeling a little embarrassed as they stood there showing everyone their smooth little cocks, and cute arses. Dominic looked each of them up and down and grinned at them.

“Well done!” he said, congratulating them on going through with it. As more members of the choir began to arrive and put their cassocks on, so Dominic helped Robert and Kai into theirs. His sister had done a pretty good job, and they seemed to fit much better, although they still felt slightly loose at the back. “Don’t worry about that, once I’ve secured these ties together, they should be fine,” he informed them as he fastened Kai’s and then Robert’s.

With 10 minutes to go until the service was due to start all the members of the choir were assembled; there were a few missing, so there would be 15 of them in total. At five to ten, they all lined up in the passageway that led into the church which they had come through when they arrived earlier, and at exactly 10 o’clock they entered through the doorway into the church as the organ started playing the introduction to the opening hymn; ‘Our God, Our Help in Ages Past’ which the choir then started singing as they entered the nave to walk through the centre of the church, past the congregation to the chancel, where they would then take their places in the choirstalls.

At the head of the procession was a member of the clergy carrying a cross, followed by the vicar, with the head choir boy next in line, leading the choir who walked two abreast; with Robert and Kai being the newest members of the choir bringing up the rear. The church was as usual quite packed for the main Sunday morning service, and there were several visitors present, including Robert’s grandparents, and some of Kai’s relatives.

Both boys were thrilled to bits as they walked through the church singing their hearts out; their faces bright and cheery, as they enjoyed their special moment. Robert’s proud family were all seated together in a row towards the front, and as the choir progressed towards the chancel, they could see Robert walking alongside Kai; behind the other choir members, their distinct voices clearly audible. As he passed by them, the eyes of his parents, grandparents and sister all widened as they stared in disbelief; the ties on the cassocks that he and Kai were wearing, which Dominic had fastened for them only went about two-thirds of the way down, so that as the boys strode forwards, the motion of them doing so caused the cassocks to open up at the back giving everyone in the congregation a perfect view of the two boys cute little arses. Robert’s two grandmothers who were sitting next to one another looked quite stunned, whilst Lauren couldn’t help herself as a smile appeared on her face.

Once the boys were seated in the choirstalls they didn’t need to move again until it was time for communion. The clergy and choir went first, with anyone who had not been confirmed leaving their hands by their sides and not holding them out in front of them to receive bread or wine; this applied to both Robert and Kai who received a blessing from the vicar instead. As they left their seats and moved to kneel at the communion rail, their backsides were again on show, much to the amusement of the other members of the choir and in particular Dominic. With the choir back in their places again, they began to sing the psalms as the rest of the congregation came forward to receive communion; as they passed by the choirstalls they glanced across at Robert and Kai who smiled and sang, completely oblivious to their situation.

The whole service lasted for just over an hour, and at the end of it, the member of clergy with the cross again led the choir, singing the final hymn back down into the nave and through the congregation towards the back of the church. As Robert and Kai passed by, so all the heads of those present turned to gaze at their cute little arses which were once again prominently displayed.

As this was Dominic’s last service as head choir boy, he was the final person in the procession that made its way through the church; he smiled as he stared at the wonderful sight that his eyes were feasting on. He would probably get a telling off from Jacob for not doing anything about the boys’ cassocks, but he felt that was definitely worth it, as walking behind two very cute, good-looking young choirboys, gazing at their delightful and quite adorable arses was a brilliant way of ending his tenure in the role, and was one that he would always look back on with very happy memories.
